Knee "popping" after MCL injury, pressing pain on ligament

I have injured my MCL in the left knee, which has now been almost 2 months ago. I still can't walk normal by fully extending the leg when making steps but started the exercises recommended by physiotherapist. Two weeks ago however, I have felt a quite big pressing pain onto my injured ligament which have set me back with the recovery. The physiotherapist has explained to me that I might have a meniscus problem which causes the bone to "pop" and press the ligament.
I have since visited the go who sent me for MRI next week and also have experienced the same knee "pop".
How complicated does the injury sound and is there possibility of full recovery without the surgery?

Thank you very much
Adrian
