Knee surgery of not

I have moderate knee pain most of the time, especially when I sit. The knee is swollen and looks as if it has a lot of fluid in it.  My orthopedic surgeon has said that I will definetly have to have a total knee replacement but the time to do it is up to me. I am 67 years old and don't know if it would be better to do it before I get older. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

This surgeon is the second opinion. He said I would definetly "eventually" have to have the knee replacement. Some days the pain would be classified as a 4/5 graded pain, and some days it is a 7/8. I can live with it...but...part of me says if I am going to have to have it to go ahead before I am older, or wait until the pain is more severe on a regular basis. Because of acid reflux, I am unable to take anti-inflamatory meds. It is too painful to exercise...so...that makes it hard to deal with at times. I just needed some unbiased opinions because I am in a quandry about the decision. Thanks for your input.

Hi there!

Well, it would be difficult to comment on the situation without the relevant clinical details or a detailed clinical evaluation. If your doctor has suggested a knee replacement and you have severe symptoms, it might be a good idea to have it done sooner than later; or you could consider a second opinion with another orthopedician to be sure if a knee replacement would be appropriate at this stage.
Hope this helps.

Take care!
