Knees giving out

I am very overweight and recently have fallen twice at work.  I injured my right knee very badly but went the next day on vacation for 13 days.  The swelling and bruising were outstanding.  The bruising went down into my toes.  After about a month I fell again mainly injuring my left knee.  They are both still numb.  I went and had xrays the first time but now I'm scared to walk far for fear my knee will just give out.  There is no warning.  I can walk but my knee does hurt some afterwards.  I walked a mile on the treadmill and swam and that seems to be good but do I need an MRI so I really know what is going on?  I can't fit on a regular MRI due to my weight and will need an open MRI .  It is all so embarrassing.  I am a nurse that knows better.  What exercises can I do to strengthen my knees and thighs so I can function better.  In the pool I can hardly get out because the step is pretty deep.  I took something to stand on to help me out.  I'm a mess.

One suggestion is to see if you can be referred for hydrotherapy session with a physiotherapist.  You will be taught strengthening exercises in warm water which supports your weight, enabling you to strengthen your leg muscles and hips etc. without putting strain on them.  Once you learn the excercises you need to find a swimming pool with access for disabled as this will have facilities such as shallower steps and handrails.  Don't be ashamed to ask for help.  Whatever the cause of your weight issue, it is now disabling you, and you need to seek help from this disability.  Hopefully one day you will turn this situation around and be able to stand proud at your achievements.  And if you want the reassurance of an MRI, you ask for one.  Yes you are overweight, yes this is likely the sole cause of your problems, but as a nurse you may have knowledge and concerns that this needs investigating further.  There is for example a high probability you have some osteoarthritis in the knees, or even cartilage damage.  Use your clinical judgement on yourself as you would one of your patients.  I hope you get your strength back soon.

Hello Dear,
You need to reduce your weight drastically. You should consult a Physical therapist to manage the pain and muscle strengthening exercises along with the therapy will help you.You need not go for a MRI ,instead focus on reducing  weight so that your knees can bear the weight.
