Old fibula fracture causing pain

20 yrs ago I've broke leg in lower fibula part.
But lately I have strong pain in ankle, as told, due to wrong healing.
It came without trauma, a sharp pain that lasts for 1-3 weeks.

Ort. say surgery won't help but can expect more and more such pain attacks.

Mine question is: what I could do to prevent that? Or at least reduce it.
Will some orthosis be helpfull in this case?

TIA

Tibia / fibula bone.. Can't remember actually which was broken... But as I understood they grow together which they shouldn't.
