Rib Removal?

I have a loose rib, and it's been causing me sooo much pain for over a year now. I am so fusterated, I just want to get it taken out! Has anybody had a rib removed? Was it severely painful? Does it feel different? How long is the recovery time? THANKS!

Hi. I know my problem is different from everyone else's. i am here on this discussion because of my desperation to find help with what i have.  A year ago, i had surgery to remove a benign tumor from the head of my pancreas. It was a very difficult surgery, yet the surgeon was skilled and experienced with this rare condition and managed to enucleate the tumor, meaning they didn't have to resect my pancreas, i was discharged after 2 1/2 days, with no drain tube, just ready to heal.

Throughout the healing process, i kept having unusual pain on the left side of my lower chest, more than the other pain from the incision, but it was believed that it was the incision. About 3 months after the surgery, i was feeling the incision and i discovered on the left that one of my ribs was sticking out, it looks abnormal, like a shelf under my breast. I went to my surgeon but he said the rib was not sticking out. i was shocked because my primary doctor had seen it and he gasped when he saw it, he said it was a displaced rib, and i can see it and my daughter can see it.. My surgeon said it just appeared that way from weight loss.

I showed him a small hard lump on the incision on the left and he said it might be a hernia and to return in three months if it was still there. My regular doctor had an ultrasound done soon after that to assess for a hernia (it seemed important to know if it was ok to lift things). The ultrasound report did not find any evidence of hernia, but among the findings they mentioned a 'partial chondrectomy on the left side.'   Chondrectomy  means removal of cartilage.  That would make sense of why my rib is sticking out--if it's no longer attached to the sternum, or whatever role the cartilage played.

Since i do not know what kind of doctor i need to see to find out more about this, i am only guessing but i think this means that during the surgery, some of the rib cartilage was removed so that the surgeon could get to the tumor, which was in a very difficult place. I have the detailed single spaced 4 page surgical report and there is no mention of a chondrectomy so i think my surgeon forgot about it when writing the report.  Maybe the assisting doctor cut the cartilage off.  He saw me after the surgery and said "You've been through a lot."  At the time, i didn't know what he meant, i was very happy the tumor was removed without needing to resect the pancreas, and i healed fast enough to be discharged in 2 1/2 days, but maybe he was talking about the chondrectomy.

My rib cage is now deformed on the left side, but that isn't my main problem. The main problem is the pain.  The pain was pretty bad for a few months.  I have a new grand daughter who was born 2 months before the surgery, and what seems to worsen or increase the pain is picking her up and carrying her.  For a while, i would go most of the day with no pain, but would have pain if i moved in certain ways, like i went swimming in a pool for the first time in decades and when i took a stroke with my arms, i felt a very intense sharp and lasting pain, but it did go away.  It was like a healing wound suddenly being ripped open.  It usually hurts to get out of bed.  I tried some stretching, because when i walk for exercise, it hurts to breathe both in and out, so i forced breathing in and out, hoping to stretch it.

My regular doctor said to go for physical therapy, but due to some bad experience with physical therapy before (neck pain much much worse and extensive, recovered after stopping therapy), i am not wanting to have anyone without knowledge or experience of what is wrong with me do anything, i don't want any trial and error.

The pain has gotten worse, it seems to get worse daily.  For the past month or more, i've started noticing very sharp stabbing pain if i sneeze or cough or if i laugh too hard. It's not bad enough to take pain meds and i want to avoid pain meds because they can be harmful to health in other ways.

i want to at least find out real information about what is wrong with me. I do NOT want any unnecessary X-rays or contrast media. If the ultrasound shows that i had a chondrectomy, do i need CT scans or anything like that?  What kind of doctor would be familiar with this kind of injury?  Googling has been demoralizing, i haven't found one single case of anyone else who has had their rib cartilage removed surgically, or at all.  This discussion is the closest i have come.  I don't know if there is any treatment that can help this. It feels like something is jabbing me, right under my rib cage. i can elicit the soreness if i press on the area but it seems to move around and not always be in the exact same place, and pushing on it seems to ease it and it will go away, and that is not a bad pain, it's mild.  Are there brace type supports that can be worn that would help?

I do not understand what is wrong but i don't want it to keep getting worse. I want to be able to laugh hard and most of all i want and need to be able to pick up and hold my now 16 month old grandchild who is not going to be getting any lighter as time goes on. i babysit for her.  i am going to have to pick her up.  I really need help. I have posted questions a few other places.  I have not gotten any response. That is understandable if i am the only person this has ever happened to before.  i will appreciate any comment at all if anyone knows anything that might relate to this, thanks.

I started costochondritis in April of 2009 suddenly and despite MRI, xray they could not do anything for me except effexor and nerve pain medicine. sometimes the pain was 10 and I would have to go to the ER but was always sent home after a pain shot( one ER nurse two years ago correctly diagnosed me). All my X-rays they said showed nothing wrong when I looked at them I could see the left side clearly looked different from the right. I went to every type of doctor and nobody could help me. One day in jan 2013 I started to feel around the bottom of my ribs and noticed when I moved my tenth rib moved up under my 9 th apparently the test for this is a moving ultrasound, my primary doctor could feel it and thought it was gross but had no idea what to  do about it. if you sit down on edge of chair and bear down as if you are going to the bathroom you will feel the bone drive in to your insides. I couldn't stand living in pain anymore. I called the thoraic surgeons office Dr Burns at St Barn in Livingston nj after 4 years of really bad pain by just standing in front of him he felt my rib and said the cartilage was broken off and the rib was shearing my intercostal nerve. March 25 I went in and my 10 th rib was cut out and sawed off at the side about four inches and biopsied it was fine. The operation took about half hour. The recovery was no worse than an appendix and it hurt less than  recovering from a broken bone. My primary doctor had never heard of it slipping rib or the operation. Now it is Nov I have no pain and am completely off all meds. Lifting is still a problem and if I do too much I get chest muscle pain but I am fixed especially from the chronic costochondritis and I have my life back. I am very grateful to Dr Burns for taking the time to agree to see me and fix me and basically change my life. A slipping rib or rib tip syndrome does not show up on mri or xray and the radiologist do not identify it if you saw my xray you would see a tangle of bones hanging down, why did I have to suffer so long. Also I was very sick to my stomach when the rib was slipping. The symptoms were costochondritis  terrible nausea extreme pain especially after walking or bending, lower rib pain on both sides even though the right side was fine and extreme sternum and upper back pain. don't be afraid of the surgery was same day surgery. I hope this helps someone so they don't  have to suffer like I did. My previous diagnosis was fibromyalgia, mental problems, tietze syndrome ,fibrosis and many others, none of which I had. Trust yourself research touch your own body learn your body identify your pain be proactive you can overcome and get better. I lost 4 years of my life to a detached lower left rib.

I know this is an older post and I hope you get this message. I'm needing to get my 11th rib removed for the same reason and I'm very nervous about the recovery. Your response has helped set me at ease a little. How are you doing now?
I have exactly the same pain, except diagnosed as 10th right rib broken from cartilage. This makes it slip up under the 9th. I have constant abdominal pain, upset stomach, and right upper shoulder blade pain. I am scheduled for surgery with Thoracic surgeon. He said that they only remove the cartilage, not the section of rib. Should I seek a second opinion? How are you now? Have been to 22 doctors to get a diagnosis, had to pick up my rib to show the doctor that it doesn't connect to the cartilage anymore. Have lost 25 pounds, and can barely eat. Was this similar to your experience?
Yes that was exactly same experience. Be sure and have surgery done by thoracic surgeon. I took pain meds for 2 weeks was sore for awhile after that but was not that bad. It was a relief after all the pain I totally healed would do it again if I had to. The correct doctor to see is a thoracic surgeon. Yes I couldn’t eat at all lost 30 lbs when you sit or bend the broken end digs into your insides. I went from 10 pain to 0, and I went back to every doctor that didn’t believe me and told them about “slipping rib”.

I jad my 7th rib removed, same benign tumour.  Post Op was horrendous, and I've been in some kind of pain ever since.  8yrs later pain is worsening and it feels like something inside of me is twisting, pulling, pinching, severe.  I'm thinking the mesh that was placed back 8 yrs ago has shifted?

Hi aggie007, you are right to question the movement of your mesh. I've had ribs 12-7 removed and ive had the same mesh for 17 years now and due to the lack of experienced doctors no one would go near it when I was insured with Kaiser because they were afraid of surgical infection. They will say that your x-ray or CT look normal but that doesn't show your mesh moving around when your laying still for a image. If you find a surgeon who knows what they are doing let me know cause now that I have anthem insurance I'm looking all around for a doctor who won't turn me away or thinking my pain is better to deal with than replacing my 17 year old mesh.

I had the same procedure done. NOT FUN AT ALL! but now I am 12 months post op and starting to have "spells" of pain! I'm talking wake me up from a deep sleep cold sweats, vomiting PAIN! I have a call into my surgeon to see what's going on, and i'm very concerned and scared something is wrong again. What happen with your pain? Does it ever go away. Im also very sensitive to touch and constantly scared someone is going to bump into me. HELP :)

Hi - I know this was quite a while ago, but did you ever have it removed? I was at the Dr. last night and they will call this week to schedule my surgery. I am a dancer and I'm scared recovery will be slow. If you did have it, how long does it take to recover?

Hi jaw44, do you have any recent X-ray of your rib cage? That is the bare minimum to begin understanding cause of your pain.
thanks!!  i don't think i've had an xraysince the surgery a year ago.  i will see about getting a chest X-ray. i hate to have any X-rays because i just want to keep that kind of radiation to a minimum, but if it's necessary to make any progress, i would do it.  i would not want to do it if there is no progress possible.  thanks again.
How about a sonogram? Muscular skeletal.  I think you would have to find a center that has that type of sonogram.

So happy to hear your cancer free. I had 2 ribs removed t4 and t5,  I had Osteo -sarcoma, a 3 cm osteo stalk growing inward off my t4 rib, fortunately is didn't puncture or affect my lung. Under my right breast around to my side/back.. I hate it,  It is the most painful , awful thing , from the minute i wake up , till the minute i fall asleep. and when i'm sleeping it hurts.  Driving even riding in a car is painful. My life has forever changed. Medication eases it the pain. (lol)  Who am i kidding NO it DOESN'T.   When you have 10 inches of nerve and muscles cut it causes a lot of damage.  I know how you feel, and I feel for you.  I'm cancer free, as of yet, 4 years 3 months 6 days. I wish i had some advice to offer,  :(

Hello! I just read the information about VEPTR and foud out that it is for use in the treatment only in skeletally immature patients, in other words - for childs. Can it be useful for adult and most important question - can it reduce pain?
Could you also give your advice how its possible to reduce pain in the ribs and the abdominal muscles areas? I am talking about the situation with removal of 1 rib and abdominal muscles after sarcoma lung.
Thank you in advance for your help.

its amazing to know so much people live in the absence of ribs i honestly thought i was the only one. in 2002 i was diagnosed with tb spine, i was operated for it and my fifth rib was removed.in 2005 i started feeling what i referred to as a heart cramp, over the years this cramp has increased dramatically from the point where the heart is located to being around my fifth rib both left and right sides, but more severe on my left where the rib was removed. this area is numb. 2015 marks the 10 year i still dont have answers. this spasmodic cramp is very painful

Don't remove a childs ribs or do anything with their chest unless it's a life or death situation.  I've been in constant pain in through multiple surgeries because a doctor assured my parents that the procedure was safe and necessary.  It wasn't.  My whole life has been affected.  This will change your childs entire existence.

Be safe.

My father in law had six ribs removed and Gortex-rebuilt placement, also. After the third surgery, they finally removed the Gortex due to the intense pain.

I am 2 weeks post op from having 4th rib re section and gortex mesh put in. I was having pain in my chest and had a series of CT scans, x rays and opinions from multiple doctors. I did not want to go thru with this surgery but was told it was necessary due to the size of the tumor growing out of my rib. The pain in the first week was very difficult, I am a healthy 37 year old woman who has always been very active and fit. I am now feeling a lot better, still in pain but not constant and have faith my body will heal itself slowly. I am taking pain meds but not every day seems to be worse at night but I manage to sleep comfortably. I have read all the posts above and agree on the soft spot, touching my side at end of incision is very tender and gives me a deep chill. I have not gotten results of biopsy back but pray tumor is benign. Keeping good faith in health, Bless

The scans has shown a mass on my 6th rib and the surgeon wants to remove it, I am in pain some days more than others but the worst pain was after flying to Hong Kong then on to Australia, the pain started on my last week in Australia and by the time I got back to Hong Kong I was bad so my niece took me to the hospital where I had scans ect and was advised to see a bone dr on my return.
but after reading all the notes I don't think I want this operation, I am very active and look after my grandchildren, I was offered pain management but said I would go with the op after family pressure, I am managing my pain quite  well so I dont know that I want to put myself through all this pain and it does not sound like the 3 to 5 days recovery time that the consultant said it would be, I am seeing the consultant on the 28th Nov next week so very confused just now

In 2007 I had my 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th ribs removed due to a neurofibroma tumor.  They also removed all muscle on the right side of my back.  The tumor was benign, but I live in constant pain everyday.  And, that's even with taking narcotic pain meds.  I've also lost alot of the use of my right arm.  I also had the gortex mesh for recontruction.  Without those ribs I have no support for my shoulder and the weight of my arm pulls the shoulder down.  Sometimes the pain is unbearable.

I'm 28 yrs old.  Back in 2007 lost 3 ribs and part of my lung tissue due to fibrosarcoma. No post chemo or radiation. Still going thru blood work and scans every year as precaution. Had the mesh in to substitute for missing ribs.  I was in hospital for about 2 weeks, sent home stay there for about another 3 weeks waiting for the drain to close.   Dr.  said when they opened me up various nerves were compromised and removed everything he saw as a threat therefore I lost feeling to left side of my torso.  My pain level has always been minimal (I'm guessing since I lost feeling to that particular area) with exception when humidity is high. On those days I feel like something is being pulled from inside me but pain is still bearable.  I'm sorry to hear everyone is dealing with so much pain.  Dr.  also recommended that I exercise and put on some muscle weight for "extra" protection as he called it. I wish everyone the best and that we stay cancer free.  God bless you.
