SLAP tear pain in trap

I’m a 34 year old female, was rear-ended in 2012, have pain in my trapezius muscle that spreads up my neck and down to my mid back.

MRI showed a SLAP tear, I was surprised that the issue was my arm and not neck or shoulder, as that’s where the pain was.  Orthopedic surgeon said I would most likely need surgery.  I started with a cortisone shot and I felt better for about 8 months.  I also did another round of PT and was feeling better.  Now it’s been months later and the pain is back.

I’m going to go in for a second opinion and hopefully a cortisone shot.  I’m hesitant about surgery because I worry that the pain will still be there, that it’s not really caused by the SLAP tear because of the location.  I also worry that after surgery my range of motion will be worse than it is now.  At this point I can do most things, not sports but most everything else and I don’t want to risk it being a bigger problem.  But if it could fix the pain that I have it would be worth doing once and having the recovery time be bad if the pain would go away forever.

Is it common to have pain in your trap, up your neck, and down to your mid back from this small SLAP tear?  I want to make sure if I go through with surgery that the pain will be gone.

Does the cortisone shot working mean anything?  Like that the pain really is from the SLAP tear?  Or that if the cortisone shot worked the surgery would?

Since this is due to an auto accident, I am involved in a personal injury case but am wondering if it’s worth continuing.  How can you prove that a SLAP tear was caused by the accident without a before MRI.  It’s my left side and I was the driver, so it’s the seatbelt arm.  Also how do I prove that I will need the surgery in the future to fix it if I don’t do it now.

I am having the same issue. I am disappointed there was no response to your post. I keep hearing it is my rotator cuff however I have a tear in my slap. I also was in an auto accident where I was struck from behind. The trapezius has been the biggest issue since my accident.
