Hi nanny, I'm not a Dr. but I was just standing at the ironing board and when I tried to walk, my right knee could not take any weight. The meniscus in my right knee had been torn and I didn't know it and the locked-kneed way I was standing made the torn part flip out (which was extremely painful).  This was a very simplified explanation. But it can be fine one minute and NOT the next.  It needed arthroscopic surgery in a surgery center with 2 little incisions and 2-4 weeks of rest.  Yours sounds like mine because I had no forewarning and no outside symptoms on the body.  But only an orthopedist and X-ray will tell for sure I guess.  Hope this helps.  Suzi
