Socks or shoes to prevent foot swelling, bad circulation?

I wanted to solicit some advice concerning socks or shoes.

Two years ago my left leg began to swell. The first time it was horrible. It seems to stem from bad veins/bad circulation. I have bad veins in my right too, but not so bad apparently since it doesn't do this. I wear compression socks often, and the lower leg will slowly swell a bit if I am on my feet too much, particularly without compression socks. It's primarily the ankle area, but it can go a bit further up, not to the knee though.

I was curious if there was something more "heavy duty" than regular compression socks. If I go for certain kinds of jobs, I may need something stronger. Some of these jobs are physical labor, w/12 hour shifts. I do not know if the cheap, thin compression socks I've worn till now would help me with such long shifts.

I had thought diabetic shoes might help, till someone told me they usually DON'T apply as much pressure on feet, to avoid discomfort and abrasions.

Can you point me in any particular direction?

You could see a P.T. that would measure and custom fit a more powerful compression hose. 40 mm/Hg.

Hi there!

Well, aside vascular issues swelling in the feet could also be caused due to systemic causes such as those related to the heart, kidney, liver etc. and these would need to be ruled out as well. If the swelling is found to be vascular in origin there are several interventional or surgical techniques that may be helpful in the situation. Conservative management would consist of leg elevation and compression stockings, while these would only be helpful in mild-moderate cases. I would suggest considering an initial evaluation by a primary care physician followed by referral to a general surgeon in case a vascular cause is found, for appropriate management.
Hope this is helpful.

Take care!
