Thumb joint click, then swelling, no injury

A few days ago, I noticed the top joint of my right thumb began "clicking" when moved.  There had been no injury and there was no pain.  The click could be seen as a jerking movement.
Then that joint quit clicking but the next joint down was somewhat tender to the touch. The joint where the thumb joins to my wrist was unaffected.
I also noted this thumb was 25% larger than my left thumb (especially in the section between top and middle joints).
I take no medicines.  Only recent occurrences:  1.  root canal end of Sept after cracking a tooth, followed by a temporary crown being put on the day the click began.  2.  4 papillomas removed from my eyelids 3 days before clicking began.
