What is a shoulder bone block operation?

I have multi-directional right shoulder instability with subluxtions and dislocations with a diagnosis of hyper-mobility syndrome. Also recurrent Inferior, Anterior and Posterior dislocations of which the Anterior and Inferior i can reduce myself but the Posterior require reduction under sedation because previous damage to the joint (the bones get stuck) however there is not muscle activity to contribute. In the past i have completed many physiotherapy courses with no success. I am now under the care of RNOH (royal national orthapeadic hospital in London England) specialist shoulder team, attending physiotherapy sessions for the past 2 years and completing an impatient intensive therapy programme with no effect. Since then the surgeons have done a arthroscopy which has resulted in them suggesting a 'bone block' operation to prevent further posterior dislocations as that is the main problem.

What does the operation entail?
How long is the recovery time?
what is the likleyhood of recurrence?
Will it make the other dislocations worse?

I have lots of questions and my appointment with the surgeon isn't for ages yet and i just need to get my head around all of this.

If there is any chance anyone can give me some answers please help.

Thankyou

I have similar problems and 5 failed surgeries on my left shoulder one surgery involved a bone block but that also failed. I have now been offered a further bone block but am very reluctant to have further surgery the odds of success are low. Have you had it done.

Would love to here from any one who has had this opp.

Hello!

Recurrent dislocation is an intracapsular slipping, which occurs when the anterior rim of the glenoid slides into the hollow in the humeral head. Along with it due to your injury you have a posterior dislocation also.

The bone block procedure is a surgical procedure used in for your case: posterior shoulder instability, multidirectional subluxations and dislocations etc.

To prevent recurrent anterior dislocation of the shoulder by insertion of a free iliac bone graft into an anterior glenoid area is called free bone block operation for anterior dislocation of the shoulder joint. Some bone graft will be attached.

The post operative period will be around 3 months followed by physiotherapy for around 3 months. Talk with your orthopedician but full recovery may take place only after 6 months.

Take care!

I have exactly the same issue,I had surgery in march to fix 2 tears in shoulder which temporarily fixed my posterior subluxation, but now it is worse than ever and my surgeon has suggested a bone block, however I have just seen another surgeon who says surgery on ut us a stupid idea (opinion asked for by my surgeon) I want the surgery as I feel I can't live with it how it is as every step I take my shoulder falls out the back so it's an extreme case,if it were only every now and again I could adjust but not every time I walk,so now I'm worried my surgeon will follow the other ones opinion :(
Please excuse spelling as that is how bad my arm is
