I have also suffered with pain in my spin between my shoulder blades.  I saw an acupuncturist and they told me that it was likely do to my intake of sugar. I didn't believe them at first but decided to try it.  And it totally worked.  I recommend that  those who suffer from this condition to try eliminating refined sugar from your diet.

just wanted to update everyone!!! Back in 08 i went to a specialist about this pain between my shoulders. I had x-rays and a MRI both came up negative. The dr. told me to try to strengthen  my back and NSAIM for pain. But since then my back has kinda healed. I still get a flair up here and there but nothing like it was before 08.
In all honestly i think the anxiety and stress for my back hurting made it hurt even more.
I also think i had a slight posture problem which i have corrected. shoulders back and chin tucked
All and all im doing pretty good and wanted to update everyone and thanks everyone for all the comments they have left and shared   (best regards to everyone )

I have pain between my shoulder blades and tightness and popping in my back and chest for 10 years now. I am 30 yrs old and have been to the physical therapist and chiropractor also for this problem. I noticed the problem started when I was around 20 years old when I first started working at a job where I was at a computer all day. I went to my doctor and they sent me to a physical therapist who taught me excercises to help strengthen the muscles between my shoulder blades which they said needed to be strengthened to hold your head up all day. Next I went to a chiropractor which said that my spine around my neck was sloping forward instead of in the natural back position which can cause spasms in the area between the shoulder blades. I did the treatment for a while and he gave me a device that I hung my head off that would slowly pull my neck back into position. I will say that I never really gave the excercises that the therapist gave me or the device the chiropractor gave me a full chance so give it a try. I did notice that stress and certain anxiety like meeting deadlines kinda makes the area tighten up and start to hurt. I can take deep breathes and my back and sternum will pop like crazy. I can make it pop like every 5 seconds. I have worked out all my life and I thought that over working my body and chest could have caused this. I have noticed lately that actually running on the treadmill will make the muscles between my shoulders kinda sore. So I started working out the muscles between my shoulders with very light weight (like my therapist said) and making sure I ran or walked on the treadmill every time I worked out and this helped out alot and also making sure to breathe correctly when working out helps. I believe that this hurting could be a cause of being on a computer for so long everyday, a little anxiety and tension and that we need to concentrate on the muscles that hold up the neck and head. I have noticed that when I'm on vacation or not at work the pain is not as intense. Try working these muscles while taking deep breathes and running, jogging, or excercising on a treadmill and hopefully this will help. (visit a therapist so they can pin point the exact muscles, I don't know the scientific names of the muscles).

Sharp muscle knots in between my shoulder blade and spine occur almost on a regular basis for me. It happens when I'm under alot of pressure/stress or may have slept wrong? It's a great thing my best friend is a DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy). One night, I asked him what a GOLF BALL was doing on his floor, he doesn't even play golf. His response, "to get rid of the tight muscle knots I have in my back." Amazed! Now wheneever I have a knot in my back (like I do right now) all I do is roll on a golf ball and it INSTANTLY removes the knot on my back. I LOVE IT!!! Unfortunately I have been to massage therapists who made the problem only WORSE. The stiffness moved up into the base of my neck! It was the most excruciating pain ever felt. I guarantee, the golf ball rounded stiff edges will dig deep into that painful muscle releasing pressure from within.  Having knots in your back is a huge burden. Can't comfortably move on with life. I hope this helps you all!

I have had similar pain for 3 years. i'm 26 years old and doesn't want to think about living like this forever. i've been diagnosed w/scrapping scapula and thoracic outlet syndrom. scrapping scapula can cause major pain in the shoulder blade area. i had a small procedure and had mine scrapped(scar tissue removed) and i do feel better. it still bothers me at times but not near like it did. good luck to all..

I have been having the same type of pain. The pain is torture in the morning. I have been seeing an Orth. Dr. who has had an MRI done of my spine but nothing was found. I recently had a Catscan done of my chest but nothing found that would indicate why I'm having this pain. The pain is right between my shoulder blades and I tell the doctor I feel as if the pain were on my bone. I will be starting Physical Therapy for what she says looks like a swollen muscle. I just hope that will help. The pain is so bad sometimes I just wish I would die. I have been to the ER twice in 1 month because the pain medicine they were giving me wasn't doing nothing for me. I have now been taking Ultram which is helping. But lately the pain is sill there. Not bad but still there.
