AMG386 and taxol

I will be starting a new trial for AMG 386 and taxol in two weeks which will be given 3 weeks on and 1 week off.  Has anyone else heard of this trial?  It is now a phase 2 study.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this will help as the next line chemo for many.  I will let you know how things are going when I get my first results which should be at the 4 week period and hopefully I will not have the placebo.

I did not do the trial, in the end I decided to go on topotecan instead as I just couldn't take all the travelling.  Might not have been the right decision because the topotecan did not work so now I'm on to something else, just not sure yet what.  Sorry it took so long to answer but I have been away for a few days.  Is your doctor at Tom Baker too.  I seldom see my doctor as she is always too busy.  I wish you good luck with the trial and hope that it works for you.  Keep me posted.  Thanks.   Heather

I have been on this study since April 10 and am doing/feeling very well. My CA 125 has gone down to 14 which is the lowest it has ever been. I just had a CT Scan and will have the results this Thursday. In terms of side effects, I do have a few days of mild fatigue each week but nothing debilitating. I also have some mild neuropathy, dry eye and hair thinning. I hope this works well for those of you who are considering it. Take care!

I have also just been offered the study.  I first had treatment in 2003 and was treated with carboplatin/taxol (6 treatments) and was good until 2005.  Eleven more treatments with the same drugs and then in 2007 had a tumour removed and radiation.  Have been good up until May of this year.  I too will be doing the treatment in Calgary and I think I have made the decision to go for it but would be really interested in how you are doing.  The side effects scare the heck out of me but I guess somebody had to test the drugs we've already had and I think you probably get good care.  I agree with you about never getting to see the same dr.  Gets a bit frustrating.  Would really like to hear from you.

Yes I do have my chemo in Calgary at Tom Baker/Foothills unless they can deliver it here to Drumheller but that would not be the case in the study.  I also am a bit leary about the blind arm of the study but would like to find something that might work for a longer period of time.  I will ask about Avastin tomorrow before I sign the consent.  It is a great deal of travelling as it would be 2 days a week in the clinic, one for checkup and paperwork and one for the infusion, which is not always easy either.  Its so hard to make a decision when you feel like you are running out of opportunities and because the cancer clinic is so busy I never see the same dr. twice in a row so it seems like my questions just don't get the attention I would like. Hope that the avastin works great for you.

I was offered this trial a couple months ago, but decided on Avastin adn Cyclophosphamide. The only reason I wouldn't do the trial is because there is a blind arm to the study. It basically means that there are 3 groups...one receives AMG386 at a certain dose, + taxol, the next recieves AMG386 at a lower dose + taxol and the last group receives Taxol and a placebo. Seeing as I've been on Taxol twice before and it was not sucessful, I was not willing to take the chance I would end up in the group recieving that drug only. Also, the Taxol was given weekly, and since I live so far away from Toronto, I wasn't too keen on all that driving. The study will become "un-blinded" after 8 weeks, as you then have a CT scan. If your disease has progressed, then they will find out what drugs your on and if you haven't been recieving the AMG386, they'll put you on it. I wish you luck with it...at the time, that's all the doctor's would offer me. I couldn't help but notice your in Alberta...you should ask about Avastin. I *think* you may be one of the only 2 provinces here that covers it. I have a girlfriend who works at Foothills in Calgary (I think that's the name of it) Is that where you'll have your chemo?
Good luck,
Becky
