BRCA Testing - Insurance Approved

Hi All,

I just wanted to let you know that for myself, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan paid the entire cost of the BRCA testing.  I feel like this is such a breakthrough.  The fact that a PPO plan would pay for the full cost based on family history.  Perhaps the other BC/BS of various states and other plans will also now finally consider the value of the testing.

The good news for me in addition to the payments was that it all came back negative.  I was very concerned with the history of both my mom and Grandma having ovca as well as an aunt with breast cancer.

Peace to all,

Karen

United Healthcare in NJ paid for my test in full also. For me I have no family history but had OVCA 3b/c diagnosis at 31 so was out of norm. I have no history of breast cancer either but being OVCA my oncologist was going to enforce yearly mammograms unless I cam back BRAC negative.
Not only did United cover it in full, they rang and told me that as someone having BRAC testing I also have access to counselling if I need it. Wow!! Did not expect that. I thought they were ringing to decline it!
For me this negative result means no annual mammograms yet till the normal age. This is a big deal to me since I am only 34! Yay!

I had it done in December and it was fully paid by BC/BS of Tennessee.  If I had not already met my out of pocket max for the year, I would have paid the deductable, but I would have paid a deductable for any health service.  It is a great thing they chose to cover it.  I hope it's a sign of a trend of insurance companies understanding prevention far outweighs treatment.  Congratulations that yours came out negative.  Mine did, as well.

Inny,

Don't worry.  I still plan on having annual exam, TVUS, and mammograms.  No way, that's going to stop.

Thanks,

Karen

That is wonderful news!!! I am very happy for you..and so glad to hear about how an insurance agency is actually paying for something in full! I did want to say though as a reminder that while you came back negative (which is awesome!) Please continue to get your regular yearly mamograms just to be on the safe side (or whenever you are supposed to get them). I am so happy that it is negative but you still want to continue your mamograms even though it was negative..Im not trying to be a spoil sport..or a worry wort but i am the kinda girl that likes everyone to be on the safer than sorry side!

Congrats to you....Inny
