Bladder Urges in Elderly Ovarian Cancer Lady

Mom is in end stage ovarian cancer after surgery last year. She had some cancer left after enduring ahysterectomy, liver section removed, bowel resection with colostomy, and omentum removal. No chemo or anything else due to age.  She is 90 and experiencing strong, almost painful bladder urges, mostly at night. Is there anything to calm this down? Her one doctor says there is nothing to be done. Is there any palliative care that we can do? Thank you. Cindy

Thanks for the information everyone. We plan on doing the doctor next week. Hopefully, we can get something to provide comfort for Mom. This little 90 year old lady still does her exercises on good days and speaks of walking about her house without her walker someday. She says miracles can happen. SHe now has pain in her right ribs and neck on the right side. we are currently using over the counter meds and a heating pad. God help me do the right thing. Cindy

Is she a patient under the care of a hospice service?  If not, then I wholeheartedly recommend seeking this type of medical care.  Hospice providers can often provide the best palliative care advice and assist the patient and family with the transition out of this earthly life.

I do not know where  you/your mother are  located, but in the USA there are several medications that "soothe" (in a manner of speaking) the urinary tract to ease such symptoms.  Also, if she has not been tested, then it is possible that she has a urinary tract infection and a basic anti-biotic might assist with pain or discomfort.   I have been dealing with a similar situation at my job of late, and getting a doctor to prescribe medications can be difficult when the patient is waiting for the end and under simple palliative care.

You said she had a full hyster, right. I know there's a condition that affects the ligaments that support the bladder, and that a hyster makes you more prone to it (my mother has the same problem, just without having the hyster). There are some medications, but the main treatments are strengthening the muscles and a surgery that puts in a sling to support the bladder. Maybe something like these will help her.
Hang in there, and hug your Mom!

sorry to hear of the pain your mother has, this sounds like you need the advice of a specialist in palliative care, do you think that you may benefit from a second opinion? i thought you can get antispasmodics to give relief for bladder symptoms, but i am no expert and i suppose your mum's doc will have suggested this if it were sitable. i wish you and your mum all the best and i will pray that one of your doctors or nurses can give some answers.Would it be worth posting a question on one of the other sites for bladder problems? take care, sharon

so sorry to hear of your mum's discomfort, this sounds like you need advice from experts in the palliative care field. in the uk we have specialists (both doctors and nurses) that specialise in pain relief,is there anyone locally that specialises in pain relief that you could talk to? i wondered if anti-spasmodics would be of any benefit for the bladder pain, but i suppose your mum's doc would use this if it were suitable. it seems such a shame that your doc says there is nothing he can do, could you get a second opinion? i wish you and your mum all the best and pray that you find answers. sharon

there is an urology forum here.  i think there is a donation fee of about $10 or $15 required, but maybe the doctor moderating it could give you some ideas.
