CA125 very high

Dr A.  I started my Carbo/Gemzar 1 st one.  CA 125 at start is now 11500,  I had a large amount of ascites,  I feel some has reduce since the treatment.   I have been as low as 2, after carbo/taxol.  3 years ago.   On Avastin, CA was not matching up with tumour activity?????

Any insight?

Terrin,
I was also dx in nov 2005 with ovarian cancer....I started filling up with Ascites AFTER my hysterectomy/debulking surgery....the fluid started in my lungs before the surgery, but i had my lungs drained....
Then slowly over 3 months time the ascites built up in my tummy too...I was in so much pain.  I was so easily fatigued....I kept asking the doctor "when is the fluid going away?"....He said after 3 or 4 chemos..but I knew the chemo was not working, I was so miserable, I hated my oncologist!  Another doctor said that I could be drained if it was too unbearable, but at the time, my counts were too low, she said its too dangerous for me to have the draining of my belly or paracentesis..so I had to suffer with that swollen belly alittle longer...by time I did the 5th chemo, I had stopped eating and I could not keep food or water down!   then I started vomiting and for 10 days I was just thinking I was going to die there on my mom's couch.
She took me to the ER and my local hospital would not touch me...they transfered me to San Francisco, UCSF and I was there for 10 days....they finally drained my ascites 2 times..I had 5 liters of fluid the first time...but 2 days later it built up again so fast I was miserable...so they drained me again....this time 9 liters were drained and I felt relief!
While I was there, the doctor said no more chemo until I was stronger...Everything was low...I need lots of transfusions.
I was sent home but the ascites kept coming back...I had my belly drained 3 more times....what made it go away was when I had exploratory laparoscopic surgery...the surgeon found a "small bowel adhesion"....they removed it and all the fluid I had built up again.....that was done April 19, 2006......a few weeks later I was able to start the IP chemo and since then I have not had any more ascites....
I hope this chemo will work for you!
You are in my prayers!
Ana

Hi Terrin,

It is nice to hear from you.
Ascites by itself can elevate CA 125 value to frighteningly high levels. So in a way the Ca 125 may be less reflective of what is going on until the ascites gets reduced.
Please keep in touch
best wishes
