Ovarian Cysts

I have been having lower abdomen problems (burning constantly) for about a year.  I have been seeing a Gastroenterologist and have numerous test done and have been diagnosed with GERD and Barretts Esophagus and IBS.  I take medication and watch what I eat but nothing helps.  I had a CT Scan for these problems and it showed a cystic mass on my ovary so I had to go to my Gyn and had a Pelvic Sonogram.  I have read that sometimes Ovarian Cancer can have the same symptoms as these other problems.  Is that true?  Also, what is your interpertation of the following results from my ultrasound.  Status:  Post Hysterctomy & Left Oophorectomy (this was done in 2006 for problems with very heavy bleeding and cysts on my left ovary)  Right ovary measures 5 by 8.8cm (Isn't that big?)  and has several cysts or dominant follicles.  It also has a 3.7 by 5 cm smoothly marginated hypoechoic area which may represent hemorrhagic cyst.  Ther are other similar but smaller areas in the right ovary, one measuring 2.2 by 3.4 cm.  (Are those consider big?)  Ther is no free fluid.  (What does that mean?)  My Gyn has recommend that I just have the ovary removed.  I don't know if I should or not, I know what my recovery was from my hysterectomy (I had complications with infection) and of course it will throw me into menopause and I just don't know if I want to go through that yet, I am only 40 and just starting to enjoy life a little, since my children are older (21 & 13).  I'm just looking around for advice or someone with a similar problem.  Thanks!!

Thanks for the information.  I've had the CA 125 test but it will take a few days to get the results.  What should a normal CA 125 be?

Hi There,

I would suggest asking your gyn doctor about the following evaluation:
checking a CA 125 blood test. While this is not diagnostic of cancer, if you have an elevated level, that may sway you to having this ovary removed.
Also checking hormone levels such as estrogen, FSH, and LH. Even though you are young, ovaries will retire and stop functioning sooner after hysterectomy due to the disruption of the blood supply to the ovary..

As far as the ultrasound report, yes that size is abnormal.

I would also recommend a repeat US in 2 to 3 months. If the cyst persists or is growing, I would definitely reccomend removal.

At your age, it is safe to go on estrogen replacement therapy.
best wishes
