CA125 results - could be cancer

I was told I have a complex cysts and a CA125 of 51.  I am going to see an gynecologic oncologist next week.  I am wondering if the CA125 number indicates cancer?

I wanted to share something with you that might make you feel better.  My sister-in-law was having some difficulties.  The doctors started a battery of tests, one of them being a CA-125 test.  She is 60 and the count was 56.  Our family was very upset thinking it MUST be cancer.  As it turns out, she had a complex cyst and is fine now.  It's great that you're going to see a gyn/oncologist, you can never be too careful.

Good luck!

I completely understand your feeling of worry, but all is not lost! I also had the same results you did several years ago...and had a hysterctomy.  They discovered I had endometriosis, hence the large complex cysts/tumor. My Ca125 was elevated as well, but that's common with endometriosis. I hope all goes well with your diagnosis.

Best!

You may like to check our Ovarian Cyst forum.. Lots of information about cysts on the upper right corner under "Health Pages". Also ,lots of experience over there as well.

How was your cyst detected? Vaginal ultrasound? And how large is the cyst?Re: the Ca125 blood test.;  There are a lot of factors that may elevate the CA-125. That's why it isn't totally relied upon with younger women. With postmenopausal women, it has a slightly better reliability factor. But still not 100%

Let us know how your appt. goes. A Gyn/Onc is the best one to see in cases like this, but try not to worry too much. Chances are that it is benign. 95% of all ovarian cysts are benign I'm told.

And, check the Ovarian Cyst forum
Good luck,
Sandy
