A CA125 is not a definitive test for Ovarian Cancer.....there is no definitive test for Ovarian Cancer other than a biopsy of the mass. CA125 is best used as a tool when someone recurs. There are numerous reasons that a CA125 would be high, something as simple as a toothache can effect the numbers.
The OB/GYN wants to do a hysterectomy based on a CA125? Have they done a transvaginal sonogram? CT Scan? MRI? What is the reason for doing the hysterectomy....if it is because of your CA125, I woudl find a new GYN.....if they truly suspect that you might have cancer, you want to be seen by a GYN/Oncologist as they are the specialist and they have 3 years additional training. Also, survival rates due increase if a GYN/Oncologist does the surgery. They also treat many benign conditions. Please question your doctor.
Best of luck to you.
No it's not a definitive test. Mine was only 30 when I had a 28cm mass before my cancer was discovered. You should question why it's elevated and why your doctor is ordering this test, there could be other reasons as to why, infections, etc. I would also ask to why the hysterectomy as well, with no problems except the rise in the CA-125?
Please keep us informed. Take Care?
When I found out I had OVCA I was diagnosed with Stage IV and mets to my lungs. My highest CA125 has been 178. It is very rare to have such a low count, but, it does happen. Don't get too stressed until you get all of your results. I am praying that your results come back as nothing but if it is something it sounds like it would be early stages. All OVCA patients and their families are in my prayers. You, are as well.
Thank you for your replies - I have had an ultrasound which shows a watery cyst on the left ovary, something I have had before in 2004. Having another blood test and ultrasound later this month then back to the doctor to discuss everything. I will definitely ask to be referred to a GYN/Oncologist before doing anyting else and will keep you posted.
