Yes, I agree. I don't come back to this site as often as I should. I received a lot of support here, including support from some of those who have left us. And yes, we should renew a commitment that no post shall go unanswered.
There some great information here, but there is also some misinformation. We need to share what we know to help each other.
I hope everything goes well for you Monday, just letting you know I will be thinking of you, God Bless and my prayers are with all you ladies who are going in for surgeries or just needing a little support and understanding ... Take care to all....
i agree, if it wasn't for this site, i don't think I would have made it this far.. I haven't posted much, cause going in for another surgery monday. Had to get things ready, but i will be back as I get more strength. I will be off for a couple of weeks, but I'll be back as soon as I can lol
Hi guys its been awhile since I'v posted anything, like most of you my life has been a real ride. But I am so glad to see some post from some of the ones who helped me when I needed advice. So even though some of us you have helped doesn't post, we, as well as new people--- are reading the advice you great ladies have posted and are thankful for you taking the time our of your day to care about others. Thank you too all ----my prayers are with you.
The only thing I would add is that Doxil put my friend into remission when carbo/taxol didn't work; so, I concur it is a good chemo.
the main thing about doxil is to avoid the affects that happen, here are a few for eresearch
The following Doxil side effects are common, meaning they occur in 30 percent or more of patients taking Doxil:
•Low blood counts. Your white and red blood cells may temporarily decrease. This can put you at increased risk for infection and/or anemia.
Nadir: Meaning low point, nadir is the point in time between chemotherapy cycles in which you experience low blood counts.
Onset: 7 days
Nadir: 10-14 days
Recovery: 21-28 days
•Hand -foot syndrome (Palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia or PPE) -skin rash, swelling, redness, pain and/or peeling of the skin on the palms of hands and soles of feet. Usually mild, starting 5-6 weeks after start of treatment. May require reductions in the dose of Doxil.
•Mouth sores
These Doxil side effects are less common, meaning they occur in 10-29 percent of patients receiving Doxil: I feel that the percentage is actully higher.
but are very bad if they do occur. Usually happens after the second infusion. the people that write about H/f probaly have never experienced it, and have no idea just how painful it is.
•Nausea and vomiting
•Low blood counts (low platelet counts). This may put you at an increased risk of bleeding.
•Weakness
•Hair loss
•Constipation
•Poor appetite
•Diarrhea
•Discoloration of the urine (red/orange color) for about 48 hours after treatment
•Darkening of skin at the site of previous radiation therapy. (radiation recall - see skin reactions).
•Darkening, discoloration of nail beds (see skin reactions)
A serious but uncommon side effect of Doxil can be interference with the pumping action of the heart. You can receive only up to a certain amount of Doxil during your lifetime. This "lifetime maximum dose" may be lower if you have heart disease risk factors such as radiation to the chest, advancing age, and use of other heart-toxic drugs. No "lifetime maximum dose" has been established for Doxil. You may be given Doxil for as long as the disease does not progress and you show no evidence of heart toxicity.
My daughter had 9 infusions of doxil, while she was taking it she took COQ10 to help with the heart, she had ECG's every other month to check heart rate, but to keep the Hand and foot side affects away, use all the cooling methods, ice chips, ice packs during infusion, tepid showers, no hot or spicy foods, loose clothes, limit hard exercise, stay out of direst sunlight, usually these methods have to be follwed for at least one week after and a few days prior to the chemo. Doxil is a very good chemo , an old one, but you must be aware of the side affects. good Luck, marty
PLease advise me of any errors - i have just started my second round of chemo- i had 9 chemos and surg this last year, and just had a spike in my ca125 from 14 to 33 and my cat scan showed 2 new areas of concern - the chemo is something thats sounds like doxal? 6 treatments -1 each month, for 6 months, not sure what to expect. ? any one know about this ?thank you
I'm always lurking, but not posting as much. This site and forum empowered me so much before my surgery, and we really do need to keep getting this message through and helping our new posters. I'm in Australia and its Ovarian Cancer awareness month here, and sadly no-one is really aware. I've been putting regular posts on my FB page about OVCA and why my profile is always teal. I agree lets offer as much help and support as we can. Guess the sadness just got the better of some of us.
I for one have drawn back from posting unless it is something I can research for you. Offer encouragement, use my medical skills , or just plain be here. Like so many of the caregivers, after we have lost the one we loved, it is hard to give any advice to others. I think that since it didn't work for us, who wants to hear about it. I know that all of us are different and what didn't work for one might work for someone else. My thoughts on this is just never give up, keep looking for that right treatment . I keep coming back because of all those women that I knew, that faught so hard and would want me to keep in touch for them, they always tell us to look to the past fior answers, we have all learned valuable lessons from those women, One of the main things that I have gotten from this forum is knowledge passed from one to another. sometimes it is the little things you do that will make a difference for someone else. Keep posting and help each other always. I can hear our band of angels cheering us on. Each one of them could have stood in a lecture hall and told their story to the world, since you are able to tell your own story, stand tall and proud and tell it for others. We need to keep up the work about spreading news about OVCA and we will win . Marty
Pam,
