Dermoid Cyst

I found out I have a 9cm dermoid cyst on my left ovary.  I am scheduled for surgery on Sept 7. I know 99% of dermoid cysts are benign, but do the odds of malignancy get greater if the following statistics are present? 1) Maternal grandmother past away from breast cancer, 2) After a biopsy of my cervix in 2004 a doctor told me if it was put off any longer, I would have had cervical cancer, and 3) I had to have ultrasounds every two weeks while pregnant with my last 2 children (ages 2 & 3) and never was I told of any cysts. I feel this last part is relevant because I have read that these types of cysts are slow growing, and my sister that had a 5 cm dermoid was told she probably had it since birth. So does that mean a rapid growing cyst may be malignant?

Appreciate any insight you could give.

Thank you!

Even 9cms is not that big.....I would be looking forward to the surgery and having the "alien" removed.

Sending lots of positive thoughts  your way.

The risk factor of being diagnosed with ovarian cancer is slightly higher if a first relative has had ovarian, breast or colon cancer ... but that risk is slight.
Also, when they speak about the increased risk of cancer, I do not believe, but I could be wrong, that dermoids fall into that category.
Slow growing, not sure exactly how it is defined, but, it has been about 2.5 / 3 years since you have had a sonogram?  5cms is not alarming in size, it is at the point where it can begin to twist and cause other issues, and most doctors will want it surgically removed.
Cervial issues and/or cancer is not related to dermoids, or any other ovarian condition.
There is an old saying, don't waste a good panic.  The thought of surgery and the unknown is often very scary...no one can blame you for being frightened, but, try to not rush ahead of yourself, there will be time to worry if you get an unfavorable diagnosis.
When is your sugery?
