A related discussion,
dermoid cyst was started.
Hi Fabulous,
I had a laparotomy in November to remove a 10.5cm dermoid from my left ovary. My surgery was on a Friday afternoon, and I was discharged from the hospital 48 hours later. The hospital stay was no big deal - they just gave me frequent medication, monitored my vitals, and worked me back up to solid food.
The funny part about the surgery is that the actual surgery itself is no big deal - you go in, they calm you down and check you in and start medicating you, and then next thing you know you're quite groggy and everything's over. They'll probably give you morphine at first, and eventually work you down to Percoset or Vicodin for a few weeks of pain management. Quite honestly, the pain after the surgery was never as bad as the pain before it from the cyst. The biggest inconvenience is that the laparotomy cuts your core muscles, which as it turns out you need for pretty much everything. I stayed in bed for a week before venturing downstairs, and I was very slow and weak for a couple of weeks. Take it easy on yourself. But after 3.5 weeks I was back at work, and soon after I was back at the gym and picking up my old routine slowly but surely.
A couple things I'd recommend: Buy a good ice pack, the kind with a screw-off top if you can - I often used one to numb my incision as I tried to sleep. Or a heating pad, that could help too. Also, if you don't own a pair, get a pair or two of good stretchy pants. Denim was a little too irritating at first. And stock up on crackers or something that you can take along with your pain meds, as most of them don't sit well on an empty stomach.
How was surgery? How is the pain? I'm scheduled next wk to have my laparotomy to remove my dermoid cyst.
Hi there, in general, it takes 2 to 6 weeks to recover. It is best to take it is easy and let yourself heal. pushing yourself too far too fast will actually delay your overall healing
good luck!
if you have an incision, it takes 6 weeks for the strength layer of your abdominal wall (called fascia) to heal. If you push yourself too early , you can weaken the incision line
best wishes
Hi There,
The pain from the surgery wasn't too bad at all. The first day I had morphine, but then went to paracetamol (over the counter pain medication).
My problem was specifically related to the laparoscopy itself. I was nauseous from the anaesthetic and had tremendous referred pain in the right shoulder.
It was explained that when they inflate your belly, the nerve at the diaphragm gets irritated and spasms, and for some reason (only known to Mother Nature) the irritation manifests itself as a full on stabbing pain at the right shoulder joint. My pain occurred when I breathed in, and was so intense that I started to hyperventilate.
I wasn't allowed to go home until that settled down. The actual surgery pain was secondary. This reaction to the surgery was my personal reaction, as I know other ladies who have had laparoscopic procedures and have gone home the same day.
Good Luck
Thanks for your reply!
My doc told me I would have to stay at the hospital for 3 days.
Why such a long stay? Were you in alot of pain?
Hello,
I have had the same procedure. The doctor said it was day surgery, but I ended up in hospital for 4 days as I had lots of referred pain to the right shoulder tip. He gave me two weeks off work. I definitely didn't move too well for the first week, but came good in the second week.
Please remember that you may feel okay, but if you go back to school without a doctor's clearance and have a mishap and something goes wrong, then you may not be covered by insurance.
Remember, your health is the most important thing you have, surely someone else can get notes for you.
Good luck
