MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi There,
Dr Moss received his doctorate in English.
He has not gone to medical school or even studied science in a laboratory setting. It  looks from searching Google that he has been a "science" writer which means he writes articles and books about science. His expertize is in writing. he is not a scientist.

I have not personally read his books but thank you so much for bringing him to my attention. I will look up his writings. I did do a "pub med" search on him and I have pasted the results below. he has 7 publications. 6 are observational reports from his travels overseas or personal opinions. The Lancet article that he cites in his bio is a letter to the editor.

When someone says they have done "extensive research" it is important to ask the question - what exactly does that mean.?

In the medical and scientific world that means:
1- working in a laboratory and doing experiments and reporting the data in a peer reviewed journal
or
2.working with patients as a clinical doctor and enrolling them on clinical trials and reporting on the outcomes. These studies are highly structures and monitored by investigational research boards (IRBs) to be sure that no patient abuse occurs and that patient safety monitors are in place.

best wishes

WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT Dr R.Moss PhD
A Medical Oncologist
Robert A. Nagourney, M.D. is Medical and Laboratory Director of Rational Therapeutics, Inc., an in vitro screening service, as well as Adjunct Associate Professor, University of California, Irvine

"...[T]he service that Dr. Moss provides (which I consider valuable to patients who are interested in 'alternative' cancer care) is his willingness to objectively examine the various options and to provide an overview of the investigators' methods, scientific rationale, and where available, their success rates. To my knowledge, he accepts absolutely no financial support or incentive from those practitioners to whom he refers patients. Thus, he serves as an unbiased conduit through which patients motivated to pursue these ["alternative"] cancer remedies can gain information without committing themselves to what could otherwise possibly prove to be expensive or even potentially dangerous therapeutic misadventures.

A Medical Journal
Writing in the peer-reviewed medical journal, Alternative & Complementary Therapies (Nov./Dec. 1996;2 (6):410.) managing editor Jacqueline C. Wootton, M.Ed., states:

Moss's Reports "represents a different approach to advice....The approach is open and honest. Ralph Moss, Ph.D. is a science writer who has tirelessly investigated a range of alternative therapies for different cancers. He offers choices based on his own findings...."

..."The Most Knowledgeable Writer in the World..."
Julian Whitaker, M.D.
Renowned physician Julian Whitaker, M.D. wrote about Ralph W. Moss, Ph.D.'s report service in the November 1995 issue of his Health & Healing newsletter:

James Gordon, M.D.
Founder of the Center for Mind-Body Medicine, First Chair of the Office of Alternative Medicine Advisory Council and author of Manifesto for a New Medicine:

"When a patient of mine has cancer, and wants to find out what the options are, I suggest that she call Ralph Moss for comprehensive, thoughtful and useful information. When I want a clear-eyed look at what's happening in alternative medicine, I give Ralph a call."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Michael Lerner
President and founder of Commonweal and President of the Jenifer Altman Foundation writes in his book, "Choices in Healing" (MIT Press, p. 405):

"Moss is both a sympathetic investigator of many alternative therapies and a gifted science writer. He also describes in detail the politics surrounding unconventional cancer therapies and has made the most sophisticated statement available for the argument that the cancer establishment systematically supresses independent scientific research on these therapies."

Steve Dunn
Long-term cancer survivor, founder of CancerGuide, a leading Web resource for patients. Commenting on our Web site, he writes:

"I am very impressed - it's got just the kind of information I was hoping for from you with the list of therapies and substances. Lets just say that I'm not surprised to find that you start right off by producing just about the most rational and informative and unbiased sites on alternative cancer therapies on the Net! I think the future is infinitely bright."
