FDA Report-- tomatoes

I don't know if I can forward this link but evidently there is a fda warning re: possible salmonella in raw tomatoes. I'll try to copy and paste link, but if it doesn't work, go to the FDA website. I know that some of my friends having chemo had to be very careful when eating raw fruits or vegetables. Just thought I'd pass it along. I heard this on CNN as well. It's not a hoax...http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2008/NEW01848.html

Take care,
Sandy

Thanks Donna for the update... Even though I'm in the "safe" state, could be included any day now. Think I'll just wait on  the Tomato sandwich . Wish I lived near you all ... I'd get some from you or your neighbor,  Tomato Bob, Paula.

Jan- I have a few extra pounds I can lend ya. Then I could eat alot more good n plenty myself. My kids don't like them so its the only candy that I get all of it.

Hopefully those tomatoes I bought last week were ok. If the rain don't drown my tomato plants. I won't have to worry about it this summer we have about 10 plants. And then there is the neighbor we call him Tomato Bob. He has a greenhouse, and grows his organic. He just gave us some Saturday. The first one I cut you could smell the yummyness of it. There is nothing like a tomato fresh from the garden.

Oh Jan. I still do go out to the garden with a salt shaker pick and eat. When we pick the green beans I eat those right off the vine too. Minus the salt.

The FDA was on Good Morning America this AM with the report on tomatoes. They are suggesting not to eat any tomatoes in this group and avoid salad bars. Now in 16 states.

Sorry, but this is too strange....ah, Synchronicity as we say in the Psychology business....  Guess what my daughter and I were just sharing?   YEP!!!   Good and Plenty's!  I rarely eat sweets, but when I do, I go the licorice and true to my Dad's heart, who also had a fondness for black licorice.

Glad you accepted our offer of "virtual wt. " with usual good grace..TEAMWORK right?? Actually years ago I was thin as a rail. up until my early 50s.. of course I also smoked like a chimney.. My whole family was thin, then I have no idea. I did quit smoking, and I'd love to blame the rest on my thyroid going wacky on me. But truly don't know what went screwy.. All of the above I reckon.
Yes, finally rained... I putzed around on here looking at all the neat photos until the lightning stopped  so I could shampoo, shower, etc.  But, it's gone now and hotter than it was..
Speaking of food and then the tomatoes... Now all I can think of is a icy cold tomato sandwich on white bread of course, with lots of salt & pepper and slathered with Mayo.. (Truly I usually eat that on whole wheat, with smidgeon of mayo, but as long as I'm dreaming right?) I'll be craving that all night..

Your generosity overwhelms me.  I know weight is a touchy subject and I appreciate the humor.  I am VERY forunate to have good genes.  Got the skinny from Mom, but got the mom cancer too.  Oh well, we take the good with the bad.  If I didn't have genetics on my side I am sure I would weigh much more if I didn't have cancer.  I LOVE food.  I think my biggest junk food grave aside from Good n Plenty's is those chopped up chicken sandwiches that they cook on the grill in little pieces and melt some cheese over it and slap it on a hoggie roll.  Chinese is oh so yummy.  Unfortunately, I don't feel good when I eat that stuff.  I do love salads and fresh fruits and veggies and I hope they don't come up with anymore icky food.  Good grief, what good is the FDA and all the agricultural depts the gov't has if they can't even guarantee a safe foood supply.

SANDY: Finally raining?  I know some people on here that will be glad to lend you a few thundershowers. It looks like IL has been getting pounded.

Sandy,

I love it....  There was a time I would have LOVED to rationalize that Twinkies and HoHo's were actually GOOD for us (and, of course, that would be totally distorting the whole story on Preservatives).... but I did get a laugh out of your comment on what someone wrote to you about those items from my childhood....  Thankfully I saw the light when I was about 18.... that I did not FEEL good when I ate that junk...

It reminded me of what my dear Mother-in-law used to say about smoking (which she gave up about 30 years ago)...that if the FDA came out tomorrow and said that Cigarettes were good for us, she'd be the first one to race down to the drug store to pick up a pack.

And, Jan, *tongue in cheek, of course*  for the good of mankind, and for the good of a fellow forum writer, I will gladly donate 13 pounds of body weight to you...  We can do that, can't we?

Hoping everyone is having a peaceful Sunday.

Love, Mary

Hhttp://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/saintpaul/   Here is a link to the Center for Disease control. Everyone needs to read this. They are suggesting all U.S. citizens to avoid this type tomato and what to do.

Marty, everyone knows by now that cooking anything will kill the posibility of geting salmonella, but Sandy's point in sharing this I think is that being summer, it is difficult to pass up all those tempting fresh fruits and veggies.  A cooked tomatoe on a BLT just isn't the same.  I  grow my own tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, cantaloupe, corn, green beans and radishes so I feel pretty safe, plus Tn is on the safe list, but when you go to the farmer's market and see the boxes of "fresh" produce you know it isn't all Tn grown.   I am not going to stress over it. I would rather risk salmonella than high blood pressure. If it ain't one thing it is another.  When I was a kid I loved to pick a tomatoe from the garden, wipe it on my shorts and eat it.  We have been told to not eat so many fricking things that I am sick of hearing about it all the time.  If our food supply isn't safe than I think we need to figure out why and put an end to it.  I have given up red meat, lunch meats, candy, sugar, except in my iced tea and it will be a cold day in he11 before I give up my summer goodies. Also I can't ask every restaurant I go to where they get their produce.  The only things I have eaten over the last few weeks have been grapes, cherries, celery and BLT's so I am in more danger from NOT eating than from risking a few tomatoes.  So, does anybody know how I can gain 13 lbs in two days?  My onc is not happy with my weight. I'll just tell him it is because the FDA has not left us anything that is safe to eat.

Thanks, I did find it on the web. Texas, New Mexico, and Illinois had the most cases. I will watch out for that, and tell my mom. She loves sliced tomatoes.  Donna

Absolutely, but don't we just all love those raw tomatoes this time of year !!! The problem also is that just rinsing will not always remove any salmonella. Not all states are affected. The list of those states NOT affected are in the above link.

What next right? Every time I turn around, something else is affected. Someone wrote me back and said all that's left are Twinkies and Ho ho's simply because of all the preservatives.. LOL

Be careful everyone,
Sandy

all most all of the outbreaks of this sort are from tomatos eaten in salads, BLT's, side uncooked side dishes in resturants, tomatos purchased in stores or raised in your own gardens should always be rinsed throughly before eating. Tomatos left out  of the coolers in eateries and grocery stores allows vermin carriers to get to them. Any tomatos cooked to the boiling point will destroy the salmonella,
