Terrin I am so sorry that you are having to deal with this. I don't know much about the tubes, but I have been thinking about lately and wondering how you are getting along. It is good to hear from you and know that you are in my prayers.

Hi,

I have had 2 surgeries for ovarian cancer and had blockages after both. The first time they inserted an NG tube (THROUGH THE NOSE) ickh!!
aFTER 5 DAYS THEY put in a peg tube with a bag which was very unpleasant too. Mainly because the gastroenterologist said I had to wear it for a minimum of 8 weeks before it could be removed.

The blockage cleared on its own within 3 weeks, but I waited to get the tube removed. I decided to disconnect the bag for the last 3 weeks--since I didn't need it. And that made it more managable.Although still very uncomfortable.

When I was due for the second surgery--my doc promised I would not be given another Peg tube and Folley Bag. The surgery went well, but a day 1/2 after I went home, sure enough, I was having pain and vomiting.
Back to the hospital --they inserted another NG tube. I was very miserable for 11 days---but thankfully I finally pooped and they took it out---home I went.Yeah.

The blockaage can be for many reasons--in my cases--just from the bowels being manipulated during surgery--and then going to sleep for awhile. Usually it only lasts a few days. I think that is an illius

If ther is a real obstruction then a collerectal surgeon should determine if surgery is in order.

I feel for you---as this is one of those unhappy hurdles in the process of trying to get well. I'm now going through 5 more rounds of Chemo, and hoping the worst is over---and good health will be my reward in a few months.

Hang in there, and keep your mind on the goal----take each bump one step at a time and reward yourself each time you've conquered that bump.

This is a marathon--and we must decide if we can run the distance. What choice is there? Good luck, Joyce

My mom also had to have this tube because of several blockages caused by the cancer.  She is also receiving TPN for her nutrients, etc and that runs 14 hours a day.  Those two things arents so bad for her as the nausea that we cant get rid of / control.  She tried the compazine (we clamp the tube when she takes pills so she has time to absorb them) and that one didnt work so well so we have her on zofran and as needed, we give her the larazapan to help calm her and sleep, this sometimes helps the drive heaving as well.

Hope everything goes well with your tube - I have to say it really did help my mom a lot and I know it isnt forever.

I am sorry you had to have the tubes put in.  I have had so many blockage scares, I feel I could easily face the same thing at some point.  I hope you can get the blockages removed and have the tubes gone.  I will be hoping for the best for you.  Marie

Sorry to hear this.....yes there is life after/with a feeding tube!!!  I know someone that had it for months,  until they were able to get her on solid foods (it was for a different type of cancer)....but with the tube her life went on.
However she was not in pain....what do the doctors say? Surgery?  What is causing the blockage, tumors, scar tissue?

Thinking about you!!!

Oh I'm so sorry to hear about this...is it very uncomfortable?
I know how down you must be feeling...I hope it won't be in too long. Are they talking about doing surgery to remove the blockages? They need to fix the problem for you, not just put a bandaid over it.
I hope you get some relief soon...
Thinking of you,
Becky
