How common are periods post hysterectomy?

I had a hysterectomy and both ovaries/tubes removed. My surgeon left my cervix in. About 4 months after surgery I started bleeding vaginally. I have been having monthly periods ever since. My doctor said this happens in 5 -7% of women who have hysterectomies. Is this true?

I don't know anything about that hon, the doctors are trying to keep me off hormone therapy for the time being.  I'm 46, pre-menopausal.

I'm sure someone can talk to you about it here though, or on that site I mentioned yesterday!  Hystersisters.com

You're in my prayers,

Thanks, I will definitely check out the site.

New info:

I had my FSH level checked after being off my HRT for two weeks and the elvel was 17.39 IU/L. I saw on webmd that this is the range for ovulating women. i was supposed to have gone through menopause and the site said 50+ IU/L is what the FSH of post menopuase women should be.

What do you think that means?

Hi!  I hope you're feeling a bit better today.
I was online at hystersisters.com today, and I saw reference to what you are experiencing.  They say that the cervix needs to shed, like it did when you had all your bits.  Well, I guess it is  similar to having your period.  You should try the hystersisters.com website.  It is a good resource of information, and very humorous.  At least I felt lifted up while reading the 15 things you learn post hyst....

Please let us know how you're doing!

hugs,

I had a total hyst 04/08/08.  I have not experience any bleeding at all.  I suppose everyone is different, but I thought the bleeding woman have (periods) are supposed to come from ovaries getting rid of eggs?  And if you don't have ovaries any more, where is the bleeding coming from?  I am also no expert, but I'm pretty sure your cervix (although it may shed a bit) does not promote monthly periods.  I don't have a cervix anymore either, but I would certainly have this checked by another specialist.  Sounds like a pain in the ***, or close to it (ha ha!)  sometimes I'm pretty darn funny!

Please let us know how you're doing, and what the second opinion is... it's curious!

hugs,
Morrowville

Hello Hun,

Wow, I suppose it could happen. It has to be hugely rare, however. Sometimes, they don't get EVERYTHING out, and "stuff" can grow back. I would suppose that monthly periods could result from that. As you can tell from my "terminology" I am by NO means an expert  in this area. I just wanted you to know....someone is out here. I'm sure that someone with much more knowledge, than me, will log on and be able to give you a much better answer. In the meantime......sorry you are feeling let down again. Hang in there. I know I'd be pretty confused if my period all of a sudden came back (total hyst), especially, seeing as how that is one of the benefits of having to have had this done!!!! Good luck, to you!!!!

Hugs,
Shari
