Hysterectomy On The Cards

Hi everyone,
The past year has seen my life turned upside-down.  A laparoscopy almost 4 weeks ago, showed tubes which were inflmammed and filled with puss and enlarged many times their normal size, and a pelvic infection.  Long story short; this is the reason for the past years constant attacks, and the reason for the attacks I had over the past week.
In an attempt to stop the problem before it 'got' me this time, I saw my gynaecologist on Thursday, and he prescribed some antibiotics and gave me pamphlet on Hysterectomy's.  He asked me to consider this option because he could not imagine anything worse than spending the next 10-20 years going through what I am going through.
Unfortunately, the antibiotics did not have a chance to work before I ended up at the ER hooked up to a BP machine, heart monitor, with a drip, enough morphine to dope a small elephant, and one of those thingies they put on the end of your finger.
Saturday saw me back there again, but I went before it got as bad, and they gave me some different medication and an injection to help with the pain.
I don't know how much more I can take of this.  Does anyone else have any recommendations beofre I commit myself to this?
Also, has anyone tried REMIFEMIN instead of HRT?  My cousin recommended it, but I was curious to get a broader view of this product, in the event I choose to have the hysterectomy.
Thanks for your time, and apologise for not writing back sooner for those whom I've talked to recently.
God bless you all.

Katie, I just saw your post. Although I think I read in a later post that the doc has allowed you to stay on the patch, right? Something about you crying in his office (gee...I've done that!)Remember to tell him you can counter the effects of estrogen with the progesterone....and, maybe it will speed up the arrival of some of the cream for you if he will give a script to you.

Have you gotten Northrup's book yet? I should go to work for the woman. She has such great ideas...there are even foods that promote the development of the hormone progesterone ( I think Thyme is one of the foods...Okay, not a food per se!) I will get my book out, but I am so tired I fear that I will get to only one page and then fall asleep.

As Deb said...DARN.........

Say, what about those old boyfriends??? I'd like to hear the "splainnen," too! See, once you have an impact on someone's life, they never forget you! Oh, and do you want to say more about the "reprimand" you got from that OTHER forum. I cannot believe it. I'll understand if you don't want to say....but, geez, what is WRONG with those people???

Goodnight friend, Mary29 (and, I'm dying to know what the "29" stands for...is it as in "forever 29"?) Gosh, I'm slow tonight!

Oh Darn!!!!!   Darn Darn DARN!  I wonder why this is happening?  The estraderm is a patch isn't it?  So you should have less liklihood of clots then with the pill.  Hopefully you can try the cream or gel.  I am doing better but even on it I still have fairly significant night sweats.  Oh well.  Keep us posted.

Hey I talked to a doc today in Chicago who does strictly bios.  It is that bodylogicmd that I told you about.  He said he refuses to give anyone estrogen in pill format - even if it is bio because of how high the risk is for blood clotting.  So I couldnt remember if you were taking your hrt in pill or gel/patch, etc.  He sounded like he could be pretty good - I am doing better with the new comp pharm I am working with and my sleep does seem like it is improving - though slowly~  Also, I have a script for Lunesta - it does not seem to have the weird dream effect that ambien has - that is a fairly common complaint and also Ambien is much more addictive.  Lunesta is not supposed to be but I still only take it 2-3 nights per week.

Mary this new doc that I talked with apparently has a lot of thyroid patients as well.  I asked his opinion about the armour vs synthroid.  We had an interesting discussion.  He said Armour is good because it provides t3 and t4 but it is not bioidentical.  Synthroid is bioidentical to t4 but does not provide t3.  I have learned in the past that most docs don't think you need t3 because your body turns t4 into t3.  Still, many people feel that happens better if you take a small amount of t3 - hence the reason people often feel better on armour.

He says he uses a compounded bio of t3 and t4.  The t3 is a bioidentical product called cytomel.  It is much shorter acting then the synthroid (I have taken it before when I have had to withdraw from synthroid for scanning - it can really give you a zing).  I have heard that some people take a small dose of cytomel along with their synthroid and feel better but I never knew you could have it compounded.  Thought that was very interesting.

He also went into much much too much detail about the process by which you make something bioidentical (yawn) which seemed to be more to demonstrate to me how much he knew.  He also mentioned several times about how he lectures all over the country - so that was a bit of a turn off.  Dang I wish there were more docs that specialized in this stuff!!!  Hang in there ladies~

Hey, Thanks so much for the info. And, the info on Armour vs. Synthroid is interesting. Very helpful.

I am on the cream for my bi-est and progesterone. I was on the patch when I used the Vivelle patch for estrogen along with the progesterone cream.

So glad you found someone who knows about the bio's...Sounds like he REALLLLLLLY (Yawn, as you said!!!) knows all about them......and lectures...It is interesting because I love knowing all the details and it is cool to hear how things work, then there is a point where my brain just says..."Okay, I'm full...Stop for now!"

So, Well, tell this guy to SPREAD THE WORD SO THAT MORE DOC'S KNOW ABOUT THIS STUFF!!!!!

Gotta grab a workout so I don't lecture myself! in the morning for not doing it. Oh, and I caught Idol (results show) tonight...so, I'm good.

Hi to everyone...and, Dawn, You need to see a thread ....it is

BlusGrlIN - Hormones - PamNYC 04/17/2006

Well, seeing that it is written especially to you, I am sure you have been reading it. But, we think we (the collective "We") may have hit upon something regarding sleep/thyroid/progesterone.....so, do not delay...let "us" know what you think...

And, I am sure glad that Katie has found success with the calcium/magnesium connection. By the way, I got that info (to increase my magnesium) from Northrup's book. She says that we are usually quite deficient on that mineral. I need it for bone support since I was able to reverse near-osteoporosis about three years ago. And, I was shocked that I was not in the normal range for my bone test based on my life-style, which is boringly pristine except for a delicious Tanqueray and Tonic with lime :) now and then.

Happy reading. Mary

thanks for the advice on calcium and magnesium- I have many nights when I only sleep a few hours.  I was reading some of the other forum topics and I know this is not about ovarian cancer etc. Has anyone heard of B-12 shots to lose weight? I live in New York State and have never heard of a B-12 clinic!!!! Everyone is losing a lot of weight.  Take care everyone- just read some of the new postings- how did these women get so bad - I wonder if they had regular check-ups?  Makes my surgery a piece of cake compared to where they are headed. I can't imagine having to worry about that WOW- Talk to after my doctor's app't tomorrow  kathy

Mary told ME (because I am special) to try calcium and magnesium before sleeping...well gosh, is it the power of suggestion?  I dunno, but I am sleeping better.  Also tried to cut back on the caffeine...and I do a long walk every day (or my dogs would be demonstrating in front of the house).

Hi Dawn, Hope you had a great weekend.

Say, I just wanted to draw your attention to a post you might find helpful in case you have not seen it already.
-----------------------
Hysterectomy - LitDoc 04/16/2006

Ok, that is the thread. I know you were gathering information so you could talk with your doctor, or perhaps find a different doctor, about getting help with the menopausal symptoms. I found the references I had been thinking of whenever the topic of cancer and hormonal help came up. Anyway, in weighing all your options, I thought I would just point out that I'd finally found the information I'd been looking for.

I mentioned Dr. Northrup's book several times in the post. Last night I read a section on sleep in her book. I thought of all my cysters who are struggling with sleep. There was an interesting section on sleep and cortisol and progesterone. I can get more info for you if you want...I am running out to get my allergy shot right now....fun!

Anyway, check out the thread and check out the book if you can. And, I hope you had a restful weekend. Our daughter goes back to college tonight...it has been fun having her here but BUSY!!!!

I am so sorry to hear this! {{{HUGS}}}
I can understand why the doctor took you off the HRT for those reasons though!
You must be worn out!  Is there anything else the doctors have recommended?
I hope you find your answers soon.  You are in my prayers.
God bless,

Hi Tascha thank you for replying.
I agree I have alot to think about.  I am 35, with two children, so I am lucky I have a family.
My Dad's sister died at 26; she had ovarian cancer, so I guess this is a risk I have to factor in, because I do get ovarian cysts, plus I have already had an ablation for another gynaecological issue.
As to gynaecologists; I can't imagine a better one where I live.  I live in a smallish area, and Gyno's are a rare breed.  I can't imagine him recommending anything unless he deemed it necessary. He is definitely pro choice, not surgery happy like some doctors.
I will discuss this more on the 27th.  I have an appointment with him then, and will probably have my wits about me more.  I think I was thrown for a loop when he suggested the hysterectomy, so I did not really start thinking about the pro's and cons until after I left.
Thanks again.  {{{HUGS}}}
God bless,

Thank you dawn for your input and hugs {{{HUGS DAWN}}}  It is good to get other peoples perspectives on these things.  I looked at some sites and they said it has an 80% success rate. I guess we all have different needs.  I'm pleased the HRT has worked for you.  I've heard mixed reviews on that too.
God bless,

Wow!  Sounds like you are having a very difficult time.  I would take many things into consideration such as your age, etc.  Is a hysterectomy the only option?  Have you gotten a 2nd opinion from another gyn/onc?  You have alot of thinking to do that is for sure.  You are in my thoughts and prayers.  Godspeed
