I have been having problems with a very bad burning sensation at my port site for several months now. I've had two CT's, and two chest x-rays, but nothing has shown up, and it flushes fine. I saw my doctor at MD Anderson last week and I told him about it. He said it might be scar tissue, or it may have slipped a little and the tubes running into the veins may be irritating them. But, since I am not using it right now, he suggested I go ahead and take it out. Obviously there are no guarantees that I won't need it again, but if I need another one (this is already my second, and I've had it 2 years), we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
Seeing this question reminded me to call my surgeon, and I have an appointment with him next Wednesday. Here's hoping I can finally be rid of it!
Best wishes to you, Bebe. I hope you get to the bottom of your pain, as well as what's causing your heart to beat so fast.

I have my port in for 3 1/2 years now... never a problem... they always flush it... no problem... I called my doctor and showed him a couple of weeks ago... he said as long
as there is redness, puss etc... its not infected... Now that you mention... my armpit
is sort of numb too. Today I am going for a chest x-ray.. as I went to pcp yesterday... also, I am having a very fast pulse rate... so i am getting an echocardiogram... however,
there is a little edema not on the port site but around it... no one would be able to tell...
unless you felt it and compared it to my other breast... my port is on the right side....
What do you think... thanks for replying. Wish me luck at the diagnostic center.

Hi,
I've had my port in for 2 years now, and never had that sensation. I have it flushed out every month, even when I'm not having chemo.
There have been a few times when they had to flush it a few times before they were satisfied that it was clear.
Call your doctor, if you have any concern. Like smac5 said, always better to ask.
Take care.
Jane
How long have you had the port in? I had some pain around mine after it had been in for a couple of months, going up and off the to near armpit. The surgeon who put it in said sometimes the tube gets something wrong with it and if that happened, I would have pain in my neck, and it was easy to fix. I thought that was it but before I saw my doc, it went away. I think it moves around as it settles in--mine went from more round to having the three bumps very pronounced. Unless it's very new or looks infected, I wouldn't worry, but if it doesn't go away, ask. Always better to ask anyway.
