IBS

Hi Ladies,

I was prescribed Zelnorm one week ago, because I have been having pelvic pain and my doc thought that it may be my bowels. When I first started taking it, I had no problems having bowel movements(sorry if this is gross). I have taken them Friday and Today and I cannnot have one. Whenever I try, the pain in my right side seems worse. Have any of you ladies experienced anything like this ? I am not sure what to think of this.

You should not be treated for IBS unless you have IBS, and all other gastrointestinal problems have been ruled out.  I was told I had IBS, and treated and ended up with a bowel perforration.  I'm not trying to scare you, honestly, but IBS is a diagnosis of exclusion and unless you've had a full GI workup, it is very dangerous and unwise to just blow it off to IBS.  I lost over a foot of my colon to "just IBS."

Sorry to sound so gruff and grumpy, this is just a subject that hits very close to heart for me.  Love, hugs and God bless, Barb

hi - MickeyVicki commented in another post that you, like me, and a couple of other people on here had sudden high BP when you had cysts.  If you don't mind, I have not seen your history and would love to hear more about it and if you have found any answers yet.  My young son also had terrible GI problems, though he also had overall immune problems and we treated from that perspective, which seemed to help the GI problems.  So it seems like we have some badluck things in common.  Thanks for any info you are willing to share.

I do use a gel pack, that I heat up alot. Sometimes the heat helps and sometimes it makes that area throb. I am scared that it maybe something that I cannot handle. My mother tells me not to think like that. I stay on the Internet alot researching my symptoms, and there is so much that could be wrong. I just have to hang in there until after the CT scan. Thanks for all of the info...... Ronda.

Oh, one of the possible side effects of Zelnorm is constipation...of all things.

I am new to OvCa but have a lot of experience with constipation ;) I am happy to share. I just posted in another thread: The most important thing with IBS constipation is to keep the bowels moving, whatever it takes. As long as you pass gas or matter they are alive. The tricky part is to know when you have a true blockage because then you should not take laxatives. If in doubt, I stop the laxatives and food until I talk to a doctor.

Have you tried to apply heat to the area that hurts? If it's a spastic bowel, heat will relax it. I lived with a hot water bottle for 3 years. And don't forget to drink plenty of water.

It seems that they put the horse before the cart. I had, in that order, ultrasound (ovarian), colonoscopy, CT Scan and barium swallow before I was given Zelnorm. IBS should be diagnosed by ruling out other diseases with the same symptoms...such as OvCa.

I used to take Zelnorm two years ago...it didn't move my bowels but it made me feel more "coordinated" inside and thus less bloated, at least for a while. I never had any pain. Talk to your doctor - you're not supposed to take it if there is a chance of bowel obstruction...I am not saying that is what you have but I would get it checked. Did they run any tests before they gave you Zelnorm? I had extensive testing to rule out other causes.
