Is sciatic pain normal after a laparactomy? It's up and down....up and down...

Okay so here I go again, one day I'm up and the next day I'm down.  I seem to be having problems with my sciatic nerve. (on the same side the ovary was removed from) I'm two weeks post op I thought I was recovering exceptionally well and even contemplated going back to work early but now my sciatic nerve is killing me.  Is this normal during the recovery process?   I've taken a pain pill but I'm wondering what else I can do.

Hi,

I was doing some research on thyroid and progestereone a while ago and found some information that is extensive, but lists some possible symptoms of a hormonal imbalance called estrogen dominance, which you might have heard of already.

I am certain that you will check out the problem of the sciatica with the doctor...I had sciatica so badly while I was in college. And, it has flared up occasionally over the past six years and usually coincides with a hormonal imbalance (for which I do supplement with bioidentical hormones since I had a radical hysterectomy six years ago). Anyway, this particular symptom is on this list closer to the bottom half...I tried to highlight it for you.

I tried to find some of your older posts...I think I recall that you lost one ovary. If that is the case, you are possibly experiencing a problem with hormones until the one ovary totally kicks in to help balance things out. (BTW.. my brother and I are products of only one ovary...)

Well, just another thought. Let us know after you have things checked out. I recall using very helpful exercises for this problem when I had it at age 19.

Take care, Mary

Symptoms of Estrogen Dominance
By Catherine Rollins
Are you a Candidate for Natural Progesterone? Estrogen is the dominant hormone for the first week or so after menstruation, stimulating the build-up of tissue and blood in the uterus as the ovarian follicles simultaneously begin their development of the egg. Levels peak and then taper off just as the follicle matures and just before ovulation.

Progesterone is a major reproductive hormone during the latter two weeks of the menstrual cycle. It keeps the inner lining of the uterus ready to receive a fertilized ovum, and later provides the nurturing for the development of the embryo. If the egg is not fertilized, progesterone levels drop dramatically causing the uterus to shed its lining and a menstruation flow results.

Symptoms of estrogen dominance

If you experience any of the following symptoms associated with estrogen dominance, or are being treated for any of the medical conditions listed, supplementing with natural progesterone cream may help:

Acceleration of the aging process

Adrenal exhaustion

Allergy symptoms (asthma, hives, rashes, sinus congestion)

Autoimmune disorders (lupus erytherometosis, thyroiditis, possibly Sj

I don't think it is normal at all.  Did you get any shots in the buttocks?  If the needle hits the sciatic  it causes damage for a while. Other than that  there have been times when it becomes twisted and/or bruised.  A cold sometimes also travels to the sciatic system. A trip to a masseuse probably would be helpful.
