New Diagnosis-What Questions To Ask?

I spent Friday night in the er for suspected appendicitis, after 13 hours found out I have a complex cyst on my left ovary. I have never had problems like this before, and really didn't ask any questions. They have referred me to a gyn surgeon. What questions should I ask him to find out the specifics of what is going on? Ovarian cancer does not run in my family, though every female over 45 has been treated for breast cancer. They told me to come back to the er if the pain didn't stop in 48 hours (by tomorrow morning) and I have not seen any improvement as of yet. Also, is it common treatment for cysts to give people antibiotics (combo Zithromax and Rosephin...yeast infection, here I come)? They really didn't explain why they were giving them to me, and I was feeling so miserable I didn't care what they gave me if they said it might help. I really felt like they were patting me on the head and telling me to get over it once they found out it wasn't appendicitis and therefore not an emergency (they were ready to send me home until I asked them point blank if appendicitis is the only thing that can cause stomach pain that is serious).

I noticed some suspicious remarks on here too, and don't like them.  But I attribute them to the caution of ladies who are dealing terrible situations, and scamming idiots on the internet.

Please take any questions about your status with the "grain of salt".  If you'd prefer chatting privately, leave a message with your email address to me, or those ladies you would prefer to communicate with, and we'll stay talking that way.

I loved your name--
Foisted on my own petard was my mom's favorite way to say it.  But everyone reading emails "hears" differently, and "understands" differently.  We're all a bunch of sensitive ladies, and for that I am both proud, and apologetic.

Please keep in touch,
Morrowville

I guess I've missed something here, because I'm a little perplexed right now.  I used to occasionally post on this community when I was having some difficulties about two years ago, and started popping back in recently when problems returned.

I have always found this to be a welcoming and helpful place, and I think for the most part it still is.  I can only assume that something must have happened because I've been picking up on a level of suspicion cast towards certain people who are new to this forum.    Whatever has happened, I hope it blows over quickly and the forum will return to the way it was.  I know there are an awful lof of wonderful ladies here who are always willing to share and support.

In any event, it isn't unusual to receive a shot of Toredol at the ER and Upon never said she was prescribed the Vicodin at the hospital.  I always have a few pain pills laying about.  I know that I certainly never throw them out if i don't need the entire prescription ;)

Upon:  My mother used to love to tell me that one day I was going to hang myself on my own pertard.  :)  I haven't heard that expression in awhile!

Best wishes to everyone ~
Susan

To all the questions:

1. They did a full CT. They did not see the cyst until they did the ultrasounds. The radiologist told me and my husband that the cyst is visible on the CT images. Hence, since they weren't looking for it, they didn't see it. They were looking for appendicitis, found a health appendix and stopped there.

2. If you had looked at my profile, you would see that this is not my only medical problem, I also have a herniated disk at my L4-L5 with arthritic facet joints on each. I have sciatica in my left hip because of this, and walk with a cane. My neurosurgeon prescribes me the vicodin.

3. My screen name is actually a throwback to something my mother said a lot when I was little. My sisters were always sick and I was very healthy, and like a typical child, I would always rub it in that I could go outside and play or whatever, and they couldn't. My mom told me that one day it would all catch up to me, and it seems to have done it all at one time. It is also a common euphemism for any type of inadvertent hypocrisy, like a criticism for grammatical errors having typos.

4. As to the comment about being real, I'm sorry if I'm not sick enough to join your club. I am a very real person with very real feelings and issues and hurts the same as any of the rest of you. Forgive me for thinking that some of the people who have been where I am now would be willing to share insight and wisdom. Forgive me for not having anyone else I can talk to about this who will understand. Forgive me for coming off cocky when I'm scared out of my mind and hurting bad. Forgive me for hoping that some real life answers would help calm the "what if's"...you know, like what if it doesn't go away? What if it doesn't stop hurting? What if if's cancer? How do you explain cancer to a 3 year old? How do you explain a tummy ache that doesn't go away? My 3 year old son yelled at the ER docs that they needed to fix his mommy. Is that real enough for you? Have I passed your tests? Or have you decided that I get my jollies scamming a bunch of sick women out of...wait, what have I done? Oh, that's right, just I asked some questions.

To Morrowville and everyone else who has been nice, I appreciate it. I hope everyone here gets better. I would not wish this kind of mental and physical pain on my worst enemy on my worst day. No one deserves this. I can only wish a long and healthy life for everyone. Thank you for the answers I did get, they were helpful, but I don't think I will come back here.

Hi, It's Morrowville again.  I had a CT Scan and two TransVag ultrasounds in the ER last week.  (remember, obese woman with 8.5 x 6.5 dermoid cyst on right ovary?)
I was also sent home with RX for Vicodin, Lodine & Darvocet, depending on the pain.
I'm at work now, feeling pressure "down there" and like I'm going to get my period any moment (although I'm not due for a week).  I would ask you to get a OBGYN who controls your testing (don't get it from here, and there, with no coordination of doctors reviewing your tests).  It's important for them all to be looking at the same info, CT Scans, ultrasounds, and most importantly, talking to one another, and you.
I am 46.  I've already had my kids, and am getting the whole kit removed because I am pre-menapausal.  You are young--don't know if you have kids, or want them, but you want to be very sure you know what is wrong with you and don't take vague pats on the head as an answer.  I'm sure you can find some good gynies in your area... where are you located?  Maybe some ladies on here are in your area.  I am in the Chicagoland area and can refer you to mine if you're anywhere near me.  She is excellent.

TORADOLORAL (ketorolac tromethamine), a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), is indicated for the short-term (up to 5 days in adults), management of moderately severe acute pain that requires analgesia at the opioid level and only as continuation treatment following IV or IM dosing of ketorolac tromethamine, if necessary. The total combined duration of use of TORADOLORAL and ketorolac tromethamine should not exceed 5 days.
TORADOLORAL is not indicated for use in pediatric patients and it is NOT indicated for minor or chronic painful conditions. Increasing the dose of TORADOLORAL beyond a daily maximum of 40 mg in adults will not provide better efficacy but will increase the risk of developing serious adverse events.

Sorry, hun...they don't give you a shot of toredol, pat you on your head and send you on your way...WITH an RX for vicodin to boot.  Maybe they told you to deal with it b/c they didn't believe you?

And Jan, uponmyownpetard isn't a suicidal screen name...it actually means that someone has been caught by their own accord, literally to be blown up by their own bomb.

I would like to know why you picked a suicidal screen name, especially one that could take us all with you.  I don't know if you are a real person or not, but that is a very poor choice of names, no matter how clever you think you are being.

Have you guys ever gotten this? They told me (and I went to a the women's hospital this time, mind you) that the bleeding is my period a week and a half early, so the cyst will hurt more, that there is nothing they can do about it (heart rate was at 134, b/p 151/113. I was in some kind of pain). I'm sorry, I was under the impression that they were trained in the medical field in order to help people who are in pain! They gave me a pat on the head, a shot of toredol and told me to deal with it, hopefully it will go away on it's own. I don't want a bandaid, I want a solution, and I want it now, not 4-5 months down the road. Maybe I'm asking too much, but they couldn't give me any suggestions on how to make this less painful or anything. I'm starting to believe that the medical industry has become so inept due to their continual focus on cost that they will hire a bum off the street if he will get people in and out.

Enough ranting out of me...I let the toredol wear off, took 1.5 vicodin and now I'm going to try to get some rest...They did tell me the size, it's 4.5x5, not sure of the unit or where that stands in the long scheme of things. They did not have a classification other than complex, said the gyno would do more testing...

Find a new hospital if they only looked at one side.....that is a major problem...they should be evaluting the test completely...good luck this time!!!

Let me rephrase, they only looked at one side. They were only looking for appendicitis. They did both the normal ultra and the transvaginal. It looks like I'm going to have more testing done, feels like someone has a fork in my abdomen and I've started bleeding, so heading back to the hospital. Wish me luck...

Interesting name!!!!

Where did you go to the ER????  Forgive me, but, I have never heard of a CT Scan being done only on one side???  Did you have to drink dye for the CT Scan?
What is the size of this complex cyst?  What type of UltraSound did they do?

If you don't like gyno's then you probably have not found the right one.  The experience should not be as unpleasent as you are making it sound.  Please keep looking for a gyn that you are comfortable with....that is very important.

Good luck to you.

I do not have much experience with cysts either. But a good piece of advice to remember when seeing the Dr about any thing at all that you do not understand, is to take someone with you. Sometimes you can be so overwhelmed by what is going on that you do not think to ask the hows and whys. And you may not even remember some things after you leave. If you have someone with you, you will stand a better chance of knowing just exactly what is going on. Plus that person may think of questions that you don't.
So when you go and see the gyn surgeon, try to have someone go with you. It also helps that if you do think of something you are not sure about, make a list of questions to take with you.
   Good luck, Chris

They ran a ct scan, but were only looking at my right side, didn't take any pics of my left side at all. They didn't find the cyst until they did the ultrasounds. What really surprises me is that I have had 4 mri's done over the last 7 months on my lower back, 3 sets of xrays, and no one has picked up on this until now.

And my pain is not at the breathless level, but neither has it eased off any. I know as soon as my pain meds are wearing off that it's time to take them again, otherwise the pain has me in tears, and having the back problems I have, I do have a decently high tolerance.

Did they run a CT scan?  If you are still in pain, has gotten worse,  are you short of breath, and sweaty? Can you stand up straight? Is your heart rate faster thatn normal? If you have any of these symptoms go back to the ER.  In Dec. I had severe ab. pain, after suffering for several hours, I finally went to the ER.  They thought I had appendicitis b/c my WBC was so high. I also had a resting heart rate on 159 (i was in a lot of pain). They did a CT to rule out appendicitis, and this is when the saw complex fluid in my ab.  I had internal bleeding due to a ruptured ovarian cyst.  I ended up having to have a laparotomy, and they took a fallopian tube and ovary.  I lost about 37% of my total blood volume, scarey!!  I am not saying that your cyst will cause you to have internal bleeding, but you never know.  SO if you have any of the symptoms I wrote about earlier, get back to the ER!!!  Good luck!  And remember, you know when something is wrong with your body, and you have to be your own advocate when it comes to your health!!  Pain means something is wrong!!

I appreciate the advice. They thought it was appendicitis because the pain was on my right side on the same level as the top of my hipbone. The cyst is actually on my left ovary though. Don't know anything to explain the mirror pain, and they had nothing to explain why the pain was on that side other than a possible gall stone (found out I had those too the same night...was a great night). They really didn't give me any info at all other than to tell me it was complex and to refer me to the er gyno, and my husband and I were both so tired and shocked (and relieved that it wasn't my appendix) that we didn't ask any questions. I have to call in the morning to set up the appt with the gyno, and to be honest I hate them. All of them. With a passion.

What kind of screening will they do to find out whether or not they will take this sucker out? I know the simple ones can go away on their own, what about the complex ones? Do they normally biopsy them first, or just blood tests for cancer screening? I'm so lost, and all the info I have found on sites like webmd and emedicine is contradictory to the next site I look at.

Morrowville, as to your question, I am overweight but thankfully I have made it down from the obesity range. I had to loose weight because of a herniated disk in my back (27 yo and I'm falling apart apparently), lost about 50 so far, about 25-50 more to go. In my research on the gall stones, I found out that quick weight loss is a major cause of the gall stones. Go figure.

It sounds like you and I had the same problem, only mine was about 3 nights ago.
See my posted about Ovarian Cyst 8.5 x 6.5 in Obese woman for information.  Although the obesity part might not apply to you, these ladies were very thorough in their advice (and very smart too).

I am calling pre-opt surgeons tomorrow and getting referred to an oncologist for assistance with getting someone who specializes in removing tumors in overweight people.  If you would like to correspond with me, I am "Morrowville".  I posted twice yesterday, and have some very good responses!  Please let me know if I can be of further service.

On which side was the pain?? Diverticulitis can cause pain only with me I had already had the appendix out and it was on the left side. Antibiotics are the only treatment for diverticulitis. Did they mention anything about that ?? I also had an ovarian cyst. Msjazz is very correct--whichever it is, it needs attention. Good luck and let us know..., Sandy

I haven't had a complex cyst, but I understand they can be painful They can also be serious if they rupture, or twist your ovary. Get this seen about at once. I don;t know a reason for antibiotic, unless they thought they were pretreating in case it did rupture.(?)
I would tell my doctor about the family cancer history, possibly see a gyn/oncologist if possible.
