Ovarian Complex Cysts

Hi - I had a pelvic ultrasound last week and the report came back saying I have a complex cyst on my right ovary - follow up in 6 weeks - I have been "surfing" and found that complex cysts may be cancerous and I am an emotional wreck!

Any thoughts would be great!

I was in your shoes in 2007. Ultrasound showed a complex right ovarian cyst.  We did the wait and watch thing for several months, with a couple of repeat ultrasounds during that time. When it got to be about 5cm, the gyn. onc recommended I have it removed. Going into the surgery she said that, even though it was complex, there was a 95% likelihood that it was benign.  Mine did turn out to be stage 1A OVCA,  but since it was  caught so early, and because of the type , I did not even need chemo.

Throughout the whole time we were watching and waiting,  I spent hours on the PC searching everything I could find,  and when you search for "complex ovarian cyst"  just about every site you go to talks about cancer.  I was panicked as well,  and lost lots of sleep. But, as all the women on here can confirm, that vast majority of ovarian cysts are NOT cancer,  even the complex ones.

Since you know that you do have a complex cyst, if you haven't done so already, get a gyn. oncologist involved in your care. They are the best qualified to deal with ovarian cysts,  even those that turn out to be benign. If you do end up having surgery, have it done by a gyn. oncologist,  or at least ensure that they are present at the surgery. In the unlikely event that it would be cancer, you definitely want a gyn. oncologist to be the one handling the staging during surgery.

Believe me,  I know that staying calm and not thinking the worst is easier said than done. When I first came to this site, lots of the women told me to stop "googling" ovarian cyst, cause you just find things that make you worry !! I'd give you the same advise,  though I admit I did give in and "googled" a bit anyway :-).  All I can say is don't
panic!!!  By all means closely follow -up on things,  and do get to a gyn oncologist if that's not who is already handling your care. The odds are very much on your side that it will turn out to be benign, even though it is complex.

Being an emotional wreck can take it's toll......it is not unusual for a doctor to want to "wait and see" what a cyst does.....is it going to shrink or grow.....how big is it anyway?  Once a cyst reaches 5 cm it is usually removed.  98 - 99% of all cysts are benign.....of course we all worry about being in the lucky 1 - 2%.....that is normal but not usually necessary....easy to say.  If you simply cannot wait for 6 weeks call to see if it would be possible to wait only 4 weeks....can't hurt to try!  Oh yeah.....stay off the computer until you have a damn good  reason to scare yourself!  You just need to keep comming here to post....hopefully that will help.
Peace.
