Ovarian Cyst-Cancer?

I have been diagnosed with having an ovarian cyst on my left ovary.  My doctor has been monitoring its growth via ultrasound, and despite me being on birth control pills, it is growing instead of shrinking.  The doctor wants to do a laparoscopy and possibly an oopherectomy, he said.  Could this cyst be cancerous?
