Ovarian Cyst and Leg Pain

I am 46 years old and was diagnosed with a complex ovarian cyst on my right ovary and was told to have another ultra sound done in 6 weeks.  The second ultrasound showed that the complex cyst was smaller than on the previous ultra sound therefore nothing else needs to be done.  Since then I have begun having sharp pains in the groin area that raidiate down my right leg along with some rectal pain.  This happens several times a day.  Could this be from the complex cyst and can a cyst shrink and then grow again? I am just wondering if anyone else has had this problem.

I was having really bad pain and was forced to go to the ER and found out that I had a complex ovarian cyst of about 4cm. It pretty much took them about 3 months to get two ultrasounds done. After the first one they said they we're not sure if they wanted to do surgery since I'm 18 and ordered the second ultrasound. Around the time of the second ultrasound I was started on birth control as well. So, I waited almost another months for results. I had to call back and the nurse just said," It looks normal. Call us back if you have any pain." The problem is I'm having intense pain that feels like...well a pinched nerve in my rectum, clitoris, and the labia. My mom is pressuring me to call them back but I'm scared that they'll say it's way too small now because of the birth control and have them think I'm making it up. She already forced me to go and tell them the hormones of the birth control were too strong when they were the lowest they could be. Any thoughts?

thank God, i have found other women with the same problem.  i actually have had painful periods for the last several months. had an ultrasound and was told i had a .8 cm cyst on my right ovary. aftr that i had 3 very painful periods with the last one in june being the worst.  my right leg was in sooo much pain i almost went to the er.  it bothered me for abt 5 days, it hurt so bad it was painful to walk. i also experience lower abdominal pain, lower back pain, and thigh pain. at times it would even be hard to sit at work for any amount of time.  i actually thought it was a poss blood clot. i had anoth ultrasound in july and was told by an m.a. in my docs ofc that the cyst had "desolved".  well during my ultrasound the tech had mentioned that her sis had cysts and her legs bothered her alot when they would rupture.  i assumed my cyst had ruptured since in went from .8 to .3 the m.a. replied, "ovarian cysts dont hurt ur legs",  and if it ruptured it wouldnt cause leg pain either. well after reading what i have tonite, goes to show u how smart m.a.'s are, huh? i have since decided to c anoth gyno, becuz not only do i have the cyst but i also wont have a period if i dont take birth control pills. im talking like 18 months without one. and when it does come, holy mother of God, its like child birth trying to pass the blood clots.  cant seem to win. but is good to know i am not alone.  i take yaz monthly but am concerned with blood clots in the leg since they do run in my family.

I have had severe left leg pain for about 6 weeks now, I thought it was a pinched nerve and sought the care of a chiropractor. At around the same time I realized I hadn't gotten my period in about 3 months, after some testing my gyn discovered a .3 cm cyst in my left ovary, same side as leg pain.  I do not know what to do as the pain in my leg is so intense that at times I can't walk more then a block.  After reading this postings I am going to call my GYN immediately and see what he recommends thanks for all your postings.

a couple of months ago i was diagnosed with tiny cysts on my ovaries but the pain is not tiny. The treatment my doctor offered was to switch to a birth control pill that gave me the same amount of hormone every day, and to skip the fourth week which is the non active pills so i would continuosly take the active pills for 3 months and this would also not give me a period. well since im in the second week of my second pack and have been bleeding for almost a month, i also have this weird leg pain that makes my legs feel very week i`m wondering if anyone has ever tried this treatment and if it works and are my symptoms normal?

well i have had a long haul with our healthcare the way it is today,,,,waitcare it should be called!I have a mixture of alot of cysts and several diagnosis,,,thanks ladies for confirming what I told my doc,,,who actually perscribed prostan to me. Its specfically for inflammation of the utersu or any kinds of pain to that area.I have severe pain in my lower right abdomen. I also have pain so bad at night sometmes it feels like back labor pain,,and i also get JUMPY leg!!!!yep they start to jump around when i get ito bed,,uncontrollably,,,CHIN up ladies we are alive lol.

hi i'm 18 and scared to death i thought i was pregnant i was getting really sick to my stomach and vomiting  i also had intense pain in my lower abdominal area i went and got a home test and it came out negative the next few days went buy and i knew something wasn't right so i had my boyfriend rush me to the hospital  i was in tears the hole time it hurt that bad the doc did a lot of tests and it turned out   i have ovarian cyst granet  i'm 18 so this news freaked me out i didn't have any one to turn to but my boyfriend and what does he know and women lol anyways all the hospital could do was give me a pain pill and send me home get this for all you women who delt with the pain i give you props the pain meds they gave me made me really sick no matter how i took them so right now i have to deal with it i cant sleep it hurts way to bad i think i'm going to lose my job because i cant walk for a long period of time and they just don't under stand what kind of pain i'm in  i don't have any type of health benefits so i have one hell of a bill coming as well  this experience is one i hope i never have to go through again

I read above comments ..& releived a bit..i m having same kind of pain from last 3 years..2 yrs back i saw gyn  ..she just gave me pain meds...and after few physiotherapy sessions ..i had painfree 6 months then again same thing started..i get pain in my left side of lower back..abdomen.. rectum and pain travells thr left leg from thighs to the end of the left toe..its continuous and sometimes also feels like my left side is on fire..i visited another gyn few months ago for checkup.He said my ovaries are fine.I m most concern about one thing..i m trying to get pregnant from last few months but no luck..just wondering if my leg pain has anything to do with it..what shd i do? if anyone had same problem pls share with me..

Thanks for the comments.  I had been taking vicoprofen for a neck disc compression, but that really doesn't help this pain much at all.  I'm supposed to have fusion surgery at the end of January for that, but not too hip on jumping into any surgery.  In the case of all the hot/cold packs, aroma candles, etc., I hardly have time to go to the bathroom during the day, much less take care of myself.  I have 3 girls - 15, 10, and 20 months and a husband, a household to run, and work part time at home for 3 different companies.  I don't think massage or proper time for myself is in the cards right now.  That's what sucks about it.  Funny how my husband threw out his shoulder a couple weeks ago, and, wow, couldn't do anything, including picking up the baby.  We woman have to just suck it up and find something to quickly ease the pain (take a pill, basically) and get on with the day!  So, I'll be lucky to even get to another Dr. in the near future.  Has taken me a year to even get to the neurologist and then the testing to figure out what was wrong with my neck.  I laughed in his face when he told me "no lifting after neck surgery for 2 weeks, and expect about a 3 - 9 month recovery!  I might as well leave the country because neither is going to happen.  Will wait til the kids are gone and just keep taking that quick fix for now.  What else is a woman to do?!

You need to find the balance in your life! Usually woman work 3-4-5 jobs, with 4-6-8 arms around herself! Try to satisfy husband, home,  kids, friends, work etc...I know it isn't easy with kids, but you have husband, ASK HIM TO HELP YOU 1-2 hours a day! I know, isn't perfect what they do, but something... Don't kill yourself! You have future and be little bit selfish for 2007! Sue

Waiting for the kids to be gone might be too late for you. They want their mother to be around a long time. Ask hubby the question  "What would you do if I am not here"?
Don't be so proud that you can't ask for help from family, friends, church. There are people everywhere that like to help a neighbor. I know because I have helped and been helped many times. Get yourself taken care of soon.

Yes I have the same pain. Had laporoscopy 8/06 for endometreosis. Right before they wheeled me in I had that same pain down my leg up my rectum etc. Was told there was a chocolate cyst there before surg and he was going to remove it. Had a painful recovery called Dr. several times was told to take my pain killers. Well the reason why it was painful was because I was having the same pain I had before sugery. At the follow up apt he said there was no cyst on my left ovary???I had stage 3 endo.The cyst had dissapeared which I know could happen but why do I still have these same pains? He said it could be abdominal wall pain. Fine had steriod inj in my inquinal nerve. Nope period came guess what same pain. Went back 3wks ago he did a vag ultrasound in his office well what do you know there was a 3.6cm cyst on the left ovary and a 5.6 hemorage area on my right side. Now mind you I still am in agony with this pain at least 3wks out of the month. so he decides to put me on birthcontrol pills. Still have pain but it is not to debilitating. But I want this to go away!!! P.s I am a walking Dr. Feelgood if a cop looked in my purse and found all my pain pills he would put me away. I hate taking them and frankly not one kind has helped. I see the doc next week. Any suggestions!!

I had a large cyst removed weeks ago and prior to surgery I had the same symptoms.  My cyst was on the left side and my front left thigh would hurt and so would my lower back on the left side.  I do not remember having any groin pain.

You know what absolutly blows my mind? I had cysts when I was younger (early 20's) and they caused horrific pain. I'm still, a year later, in total dis-belief that I had a stomach full of tumors and no damn symptoms! I truly know why they call Ovarian cancer a silent killer. Good luck to you and I really hope you get some relief soon. I have a horrible time with chemo pain in my knees, ankles and feet and everyone keeps throwing morphine, demerol and percocet's at me - great, if I didn't have a 3.5yr old to look after! It's not an option for me to be doped up lying on the couch all day. I sympathize with you dearly....

Wow, i'm so sorry for you.  I know what you mean about trying to raise kids on all the drugs; and then they have shows like "Oprah" making us feel criminal for taking them!  Did, before you were diagnosed, have a complete lack of any sexual appetite, feel completely exhausted all the time, and no desire to do anything (including showering, going out, etc.); it just requires too much energy of me right now.  I just feel sooo pathetic and like I'm just going through the motions of life.  These are my mental issues along with the physical ones (and I already take Zoloft and Wellbutrin for mild anxiety and depression).  God Bless You! I felt better than I ever had, believe it or not! I had just lost about 25lbs (which have now come back, and then some, thanks to my lovely steroids) had a new man and a new job - this really came from out of no where. I was only 26yrs old, no family history of any cancer.... really hard to wrap my head around, even now. I too, take Wellbutrin, but only 150mg/.day - do you mind me asking what dose you are on? My dr prescribed the 300mg slow release tablets to me, but I'm too chicken sh*t to take them. I would not make a very good drug addict, that's for sure! I keep joking that I have a mini drug store in my house - the amount of narcotics they give you is mind boggling! And I honestly don't understand how anyone could get hooked on them - they all make me sick to my stomach! I too, now feel like I just go through the motions of life - I'm so tired all the time, it's hard to mentally talk myself into getting dressed and starting my day. I hope you have some brighter days ahead and I will, for sure, keep truckin'!

Thanks again for your thoughts.  I wish i could jump through the computer to you all.  I am sooooo alone right now I cry alot.  Don't have much of a family; don't like to bother my friends (my "best" friend has a brain tumor - talk about real problems!); don't have a church; and my husband just doesn't get it.  I say every single day to him, "what happens if I get hit by a bus today?"  He keeps telling me to go to the Dr., but I can't find the time and he, of course, works.  I'll work something out.  I just really owe it to my kids to be here, I know.  I'm going through ALOT of other stuff in my life right now as well that is really bad, but I suppose we'll get through it.  Thanks.

Just a hint, cold scatters, heat gathers.  Cold is good to scatter the pain, but it often just sends it somewhere else. Heat draws blood to the area, we have tried alternating heat/cold. With some pain it seems to help. There are tablets that my daughter uses in the shower that seems to relax her alot. Aromic therapy. Also the aromatic candles. At the pain clinic they told her that if you understand your pain and work with it, it will ease up. She is going for massage once a week now. Her insurance is covering it  because the Doc ordered it. She uses the medicine ball daily at home to prevent the adhesions. She was on pain pills for  2 weeks post op, then only when she felt she really needed one. Takes an occasional tylenol now, but says she is pain free 99% of the time.

Compare this pain to the rupture of the ovarian follicle that occurs each month with ovulation. Those are called "monthly cramps"  they are minute compared to a cyst, since most men don't do the monthly thing, ha ha ha,  how in the hell do they know about the pain?  The pain associated with cysts/tumors is real and needs to be dealt with in a humane fashion. If waiting for them to shrink, or a surgical removal, or post surgery  a women needs relief from the pain. Insist on pain relief from the medical field. If you have a pain clinic in your town and the pain is keeping you from your normal activity, give them a call. Pain is a symptom of the body trying to tell you something. My daughters onoco refered her to the pain clinic here in our city. My one concern is though, if you do take pain killers, take them sensibly, do not get an addiction. My heart goes out to all of you, "A womans work is never done" but when pain interfers, that work darn hard to do.

I agree with all the above. I had all the same pains with my cyst and the doc's all said it was not related(even had a spinal x-ray because of tailbone pain). Anyway, don't be fooled they can and do cause pain all over the abodomen and pelvis(and back).Fun whow!

Exact same pain every time I've had ovarian cysts.  It lets you know where your "pelvic floor" is, doesn't it!  (Try explaining it to a man, THAT'S fun).  The only thing that helped me ease the pain was ice packs on my lower abdomen all day (and night).  I did this (with doctor's orders) for every cyst and after each surgery for those cysts.  

Oh, and my last Ob/GYN (the only one I've found here worth his degree) said that cysts *DO* stretch the ligaments holding the fallopian tubes and ovaries and *CAN* cause excruciating pain from mid-abdomen through the pelvic floor and down both legs.  This after two female OB/GYNs told me cysts don't hurt - even when they rupture.  (I felt bad wishing ovarian cysts on them but I'll get over it) :-)

Sorry, one more thing.  I also have pain in both legs, almost cramping-like, sometimes worse than other times.  I'm a mess!
