Ovarian Mass

August 2007 I went to the emergency room with right quadrant pain. The ultrasound determined a small functional cyst.

October I went to an OBGYN, because of the reaccuring right pain with my cycle. The Doctor suggested and ablation, she froze the lining of my uterus, which was done in December. Well, I've had my second cycle since then and nothing has changed.

I've had a CT scan and an ulrasound both abdominally and vaginallly. My MRI pelvis without and with contrast, which was done two weeks after my ultrasound showed the cyst had grown 2 cm. The findings on the MRI are......;. Complex multilocular right adnexal mass with signal characteritics indicating the presence of fluid and blood, as well as contrast enhancement of the septations between locules. The lesion may represent a cystadenoma or cystadenocarcinoma. A complex functional multiocular cyst is not excluded. Correlation with clinical and laboratory findings is necessary.

The cyst measures 5.19cm transversely, 3.9cm in anterior - posterior diameter, and 5.02 cm from superior to inferior.

I've been experiencing very heavy and painful cycles since 2003. I'm done having my cycle, every month I can't function for a few days, it's horrible.

My OBGYN said the ovary needs to come out and referred me to a OBGYN Oncologist. The other concern is my right pelvic kidney. Its origin is the pelvis and it functions normally. Of course, my fear is that it is cancerous, and I know the only way to find out is by a biopsy. Would you recommend a hysterectomy at 42?  I'm finished having children, so that isn't a concern. Any advice would be helpful.

Thank you!

Dear Jackie,
it sounds like you are getting good care. Surgery is the right next step.
At very least that right ovary should be removed.

indications for removal of the uterus and possibly the left ovary include:
-cancer
-infection
-pelvic pain
-severe endometriosis

If you are having significant symptoms with your periods and you are done with having children, removing the uterus makes sense.

You should bring up these issues with your gyn oncologist at your preop appointment.

please let us know how everything goes
best wishes

Hi there, those tests are what are called acute phase reactants. that means if there is an irritation, they are abnormal. It is not specific to a particular diagnosis.
take care

Would high alkaline phosphatates and a high ESR be related to my ovarian mass? If so does this mean the chances of the mass being cancerous are greater? I appreciate your comments, Thank you!
