Ovarian Mass

A sonogram performed on my 29 year old daughter, who has a two year old child, revealed a 2.5 cm mass on one of her ovaries.  She has been off of birth control pills for six months in an attempt to get pregnant and she has had very irregular periods.  She has no symptoms of ovarian cancer such as cramps, bloating, pain in back, etc..

The mass is circular with well defined edges and for what it's worth, the sonogram tech and the OB/GYN say that the mass doesn't look like a malignant tumor.  My daughter is scheduled for a laparoscopy, or something like that on Monday the 13th of October and of course, we are all worried sick.  The doctor has assured us that the odds of the mass being malignant is extremely small given that she has no symptoms whatsoever and her sonogram is normal in all areas except for the mass.  The doctor mentioned that the mass may be a dormoid.  Also, the CA-135 blood test rendered a reading of 53, slightly higher than the 35 that they like to see.  The doctor isn't worried about the 53 reading since my daughter was still on her period yesterday when they performed the test and the fact that from what I've read on various medical sites, the CA-135 test is not very accurate.

So, does anyone have any experience in this area?  Our family history has no ovarian cancer in it and we are at a loss to explain what is going on.  For now, we'll just have to trust my daughter's OB/GYN.

Thanks,
TexasVet

Please don't worry too much about the CA-125. It's so unreliable for pre-menopausal women! My Mom had a CA 125 of 91 and a 10cm ovarian mass and guess what, it was completely benign. I know how hard it is to wait for the surgery and results... we waited for 2 long months for the surgery. The pathology report came back just 2 days later though so that was good. Try and stay positive, I know - easier said than done but I'm sure she will be just fine! :)

Hi, hoping that surgery tomorrow goes well.  Please, if you can, let us know.

Most cysts are benign and the CA-125 is used more as a marker for post-menopausal women, women who have ovarian cancer and those on chemo.  The test is not accurate for women still menstruating as many factors can cause a false-positive or negative.

All that information can't stop you from worrying, though.  I pray it all goes well.

hey there ms vet :)
relax and breathe a lil ... they probably want to do the lap to discover the nature of the cyst (polycystic, functional or hemmorhagic - benign) or (serous mucinous stromal - cancerous) or even endometriomas from previous endo disease ... they probably will take the cyst out and have a pathology report on it come back in a few days but they can tell u some things about it before the path report comes back (usully 1 - 2 weeks) ... depending on the type of doc doing the surgery they would probably just close her up in they are a regular gyn or endocrinologist ... if u use a gyn onc (preferred type doc if there is a suspicion of ca - he will continue foward with removal of any and all diseased tissue making a larger incision and if u express to him u want her fertility spared than please tell him so)  whatever the result make sure u know all about it before u close ur account with ur doc
god richly bless u
