Ovarian cyst - size of soccer ball - possible ovca?

Last week I was diagnosed with a soccer ball size cyst on my right ovary.  My bloodwork came back normal, but my ob/gyn wants to take it out asap due to its size.  She will have a gyn oncologist there during the surgery.  She said she is still not sure if its something to be worried about and she won't know until she gets in there.  in 2004, she diagnosed me with Grave's disease and hyperthyroidism. I immediately went through radio-active iodine and shrunk my thyroid to nothing.  I then got on thyroid meds and spent two years trying to get that regulated.

I've read that hyperthyroidism increases the risk of ovarian cancer and now I'm really scared of what she will find when she gets in there.  I know there are treatment options, but I'm worried about what will happen with my career if I am diagnosed.  I have defined myself through my work and it helps me stay sane.  I am about a week away from my surgery and this not knowing is so hard.  There are so many things I want for my family, and this isn't one of them.

Btw, I am 27 years old, have been in a long term relationship for almost 5 years and have no kids.  This was the year I was going to try to conceive.  I just feel so lost and scared.

hey! im a fifeteen year old girl just dignosed with stage three ovarian cancer.i like you had a cyst the size of a small watermelon.which concluded into surgery and i also had an obygn in the room when the surgery was going on. they completely removed my right ovary and left some of my left.so i got lucky because going into surgery they were removing both ovarys meaning no kids of my own ever.it was probably the scariest thing i had heard.but now im on my third cycle out of four on chemo and doing fine! and im sure things will work out for the best. good luck to you and keep me posted.

good luck

I'll be praying for you.  Best of luck on your recovery & keep us posted.  I just saw a segment on CNN about an enormous ovarian mass removed successfully!  Peace.

Hi Ashley, I am 57 and had previously had my uterus removed due to fibroids. I had already had my three children raised and gone. I thought they also had removed the ovaries at the time, but when my stomach became so distended it looked like I was pregnant (24cm ovarian cyst), I was referred to a great Gyn/Onc at the University of Michigan. He said if all was benign, he would remove the cyst and that ovary and leave the other and be done. At my age, and with this history, I just asked him to take both ovaries while he was there.

Well, my surgery was a week and a half ago, and everything is great. All benign, and I felt good enough to be out shopping and doing normal things within 5 days. I did not even spend one night in the hospital. Laparoscopy is an awesome thing. Good luck to you.
