Ovarian cyst problem

Hello,

to start i am a 21 year old female and i have a problem.....okay, in november my stomach was getting bigger and it was hard to i did an ultrasound and they noticed that i had a large 30 cm ovaria cyst...a month later, i had a lot of pain and did another ultrasound and they noticed that the cyst had decreased to 15 cm....then it happend again and they thought it was my appendix, so i went in for surgery and they noticed that it wasnt my appendix it was the cyst again...so they removed the cyst and my appendix and sent it and it turned out to be a MUCINOUS CYSTAdENOMA,...it was benign....now.....after the surgery i had the same pain i had when it burst the first three times so i did another ultrasound and they saw nothing again.....RECENTLY, i had another ultrasound because my stomach was getting bigger again and they found a 16 cm cyst....the doctor told me to do an ASPIRATION to make me more comfortable but it was way too painful so they only got 7cm of it out.....the other day...i had lots of pain AGAIN and i went to the ER and they said that the cyst was completley gone....NOW...

HERE IS MY QUESTION....i have beenr eading online about something called PSEUDOMYOXEMA PERITONEI...which is a condition where mucous builds up into the abdomen and eventually it blocks all ur organs and its pretty bad....the doctors i have been seeing have not mentioned anything about this...and they seem to think its a good thing when they burst cause then i am more comfortable....BUT isnt it bad when mucous spills into the abdomen...?????? im so worried PLEASSSSSSSSE GIVE ME SOME GOOD ADVICE

Hi there

These are just descriptive words (like saying something is round or square  has one room or 2 rooms with in the cyst ). until the cyst is looked at under the microscope, you do not have a diagnosis.
most cysts are related to ovulation and are gone at the next menstrual cycle.

To Shutterfly
that is a very small cyst and will probably go away with your next cycle
fibroids are benign muscle tumors and can die (necrose0 and cause pain. After a few days, the pain from a necrotic fibroid will go away

Good evening.  I am going through a similar situation and may be a little ahead of you at this point in the doctor visit routine.  I was referred to an obgyn oncologist which from what most say on this blog is preferred.  They can not say if any mass or cyst is cancer until they go in there.  I too am 39 years old.  What seems to be the preferred method is to go in via the belly button and biopsy the cyst. If its okay, which 90+ % of all cysts are, then they cut it up and pull it through those small incinsions.  Yours seems larger and since your report says Fibroid then maybe they will need to use a different procedure.  From what I have read (just search on yahoo or google fibroids) they are rarely cancer.  I am just a patient and am awaiting my surgery on 9/19/07 for my outcome.  I hope you are going to see an obgyn oncologist and hopefully that doctor will explain your situation in detail to ease your mind.  The doctor here answers questions when they can and usually a few at a time.  You can tell by looking at when the question was posted and how long it takes for the response to kind of gauge when yours will be answered.  Good luck!

Hi there,
sorry for my delay (I was traveling in England)

I agree with AB - you need to see a gynecologist and preferably a gyn oncologist for some advice.

A mucinous cystadenoma is a benign tumor of the ovary. They are famous for being very large.

If your whole ovary was not removed at the time of your surgery, it is possible that a small segment of the tumor was left behind and has returned. it is also possible that you have another tumor on your other ovary.

You need to have good and clear information about what is going on.
here are some suggestions:

-get a copy of the operative note from your surgery
-get a copy of the pathology report from your surgery

You need a good x-ray evalaution of what is going on. I would suggest a CT scan of the abdomen and pelvic. This scan will see your ovaries (or remaining ovary) and also see if you have any free fluid surrounding the abdomen. It is also a good way to evaluate the appendix.

Pseudomyxoma peritonei is a condition where there is free flowing mucinous material in the abdomen. It is most commonly seen after a mucinous tumor of the appendix ruptures.

Ultimately, you may need another surgery. And you should have it by someone with alot of experience with this issue such as a gynecologic oncologist. If you still have your appendix, I would strongly encourage you to ask your surgeon to have the appendix removed even if it looks normal.
please give us know what happens

Have you seen a GYN? I am having problems with my health as well. I found that seeing different Dr. help. Like in all professions, some are a lot better at there jobs than others. I am not a Dr. but I really wish I could help you.  I know you probably have a busy life and its hard to go to the Dr. constantly, but this is important. See as many Dr's as you need until you find one that you feel has the best knowledge of your situation.
Personally I think you need to go somewhere like the womens grace center in Calgary. AB.
