Pain after surgery

I had a laparotomy on the 30th of April to remove a dermoid cyst and right ovary. I am still very swollen and in quite a bit of pain.  The problem is that when I have to make a bowl movement I get menstrual like cramps, it also hurts when I urinate, but that pain is different.

Hi,
I just had a laparotomy to remove a dermoid cyst last week. The doctor also had to take out my right ovary because there was no viable ovarian tissue left.

I had a morphine pump for one day after the surgery - basically, you press a little button whenever it hurts and within a few minutes pain goes away. I found that I did not need to use it too much since I also had a continuous release anesthetic pump called OnQ attached to the incision site.
All I remember about the first two days is that I slept ALOT. My friends and family came to visit and I almost fell asleep mid-conversation! My doc suggested that I get out of bed the second day and try to walk around to avoid getting a deep vein thrombosis. Getting out of the bed was not fun. I had to wiggle around the bed alot because I couldn't use my stomach muscles to get up. That was the first time it actually hurt. But I found that it got easier the more I practiced getting out of bed. By the third night, I could get out of bed and walk around by myself.

So, on day 2 no more morphine, and on day 4 no more OnQ for me. I took oxycodone to manage pain starting the 4th day but never took it more than twice a day. Now it's been about 10 days I haven't been taking any drugs for awhile.
Anyway, I hope this helps you prepare for the surgery. I did not know what to expect and I must admit I was scared!
Good luck!

HI Christine,

How do you feel now? I'm scheduled to have a laparotomy to have my dermoid cyst and possibly my right ovary removed as well next Thursday.  Anything you'd like to tell me before I go under?

Thanks!

Hi Christine,

That sounds like normal postop stuff. you should go see your surgeon for an exam to be sure there is no sign of infection or bladder infection.
It takes a good 6-8 weeks before your abdomen will be less swollen
best wishes to you
