Platelets?

Question...

My mom came back from the doctor...they did some bloodwork. Her red and white counts are fine. From the previous bloodwork they did they said even the cancer is fine (for now I guess...hopefully permanently!)

But the doc said her platelets were low. She has to be careful because she can bruise and bleed easily. She is going back to the doc Monday I think for an injection to hopefully get the platelets up.

But if the platelets relates to bleeding, then why are they making her continue with the coumadin.....isnt the coumadin thinning her blood? They said its the chemo doing this to the platelets. But Im confused. I hope there isnt another delay in her treatment.

Anyone?

My blood platelets where low also and my surgery was cancelled. Do you know what the numbers are for her labs. I went to a hematologist are he came to me while I was in the hospital for other reasons. If she is not satisfied I would have her see one of them for their opinion.

They also give blood thinners to keep clots from forming so easily in the mediport site.  They can decrease her coumidin dose to help build her platelets back up, too.

My mom has CMML and has to take couduim because of a heart problem. She goes to a oncgolist and he told us it is safe for her to take until she reached the 50,000 mark. Well today she was 41,000 when cbc was taken and they took her off blood thinner at once.So it depends just how low they go. Once they drop below 50,000 its almost like a natural blood thinner because you lose the ability to clot.
Good Luck
