Question for Alan

So can a patient get the Genistein/soy isoflavone,   from somewhere?  If Leslee went to her onocologist and asked for the carbo-p  and also asked for the  soy stuff, could it happen that she might be able to talk them into it?   She is slated to start Gemzar, which I am very anxious about.  At this point I think they should be listening to her suggestions,  right?   It seems you can buy the soy isoflavone  on the net.  I understand that  the soy makes the estrogen receptors sensitive again, and so that the carbo can work again??  Am I right?  We only have 2 weeks to get something lined up besides the Gemzar.  I am wondering also, if a clinic is not lined up for a trial, like OVATURE, can a person ask them to try and get you into the trial through their resources.  There are none close to us.  I am trying to compile a list of better choices for her to talk to them about.;   Marty

Hi Marty,

You are looking specifically for Genistein from 'fermented' soy.  Essential anything fermented yields good health benefits (look at keifr for instance).  So, where do you get this stuff?  One place is 'Natures Way' (naturesway dot com) they have a fermented soy version there which has good percentages for genistein and danziem (I'm sure I'm spelling that wrong right now).

Beyond that there is the smelly Halen 951 drink which is very expensive, but in a research paper that is widely touted, helped an ovarian cancer patient stabalize her 'no longer responsive to chemo' cancer for months then went back on carbop and it worked.  The stuff is nasty though, but if it's where you are looking to go...it's a very good choice (it has very high levels of what you are looking for).

Also life extension foundation has some, but they are not from fermented soy but it does have high levels as well.

Remember, this is not a magic bullet!

For the doctors...eh...it's going to depend on what they think.  You'll usually get them to 'agree' when 'they' believe all hope is lost (because they are trying to play nice now it's 'at the end' according to them...pathetic huh?).

Shoot me a message if you need some links!

Also, regarding estrogen, that's one way specifically why genistein works...it's binds to the receptors in place of estrogen...mimicking it.  Because it is less powerful, it effects treatment that way (for instance).

she will have to have the estrogen assay Tests first before we can persue this, but I will keep you posted , she is going to have a conference call Monday with Mayo and has a long list of questions she wants answered. She is determined to get some positive action now,  she wants a remission so bad,  she feels that since her physical health appears to be good  at the present time, she would like to be as aggressive as possible. We feel like her clinic here, under the guidence of Mayo, has been passive  and is more into quality of life rather than actually killing the cancer.  I don't really like her head onocologist here, I feel he is more  a book person , rather than a foreward looking chance taker.  That is why we are trying to gain a more prominent place on the team.  The differences in approach to chemo and other stratagy is so apparent when you read reports from all over the world,  there does not seem to be an easy exchange of the prominent reports of good results.  I would like to see a world correlation of facts pertaining to OVCA.  One central cancer data collecting  and sorting out of facts and fallicies,  with the aid of the worlds best onocologist and researcher minds  in charge,.  I have no doubts that this could be done, but it is probably far our in the future. Wish I were younger, smarter and wealthy, I would shake some booty in this field.   lol  Marty

Did you manage to find some Genistein? If it isn't a readily available supplement in the US, my hubbie is travelling back to Aus for a holiday monday for 2 weeks and he could grab some and I could get it to you when he gets back. Please email me through my profile if you want to work something out (so we don't annoy everyone with a post). Bron

I know this might not help but the 'good' soy herbal supplements should have it. I used to work in the testing lab for Blackmores Nutriceutical company in Australia and used to actually assay genistein (and a couple of other isoflavones) in their supplement. I am not sure that this would translate in the US. I say 'good' as you need to have confidence that the company does use the right species to have the isoflavones you actually want (and what is specified on the label)-let me say we used to do competitor surveys and some of the vitamen/herbal supplement companies were being rather non-specific in their sourcing and their ability to meet the equivalence to the labelled active ingredient was not great.
In some ways it would make sense if the cells/tumour is eostrogen sensitive to have natural or plant eostrogens such as soy isoflavones to prompt the cells to be active at the time that you are dosing the body with chemo (since MSPC may be not as highly active). But at the same time I would be cautious if you know Leslie is eostrogen sensitive as you don't want to make more work for the chemo. Just my completely off the cuff thoughts.
It would be interesting to see what Leslie's Dr says.
Good luck
