Sign of Ovarian

Hello.
I am a cancer survivor.  Going on my fourth year Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.  My wife and I (she is 30) were trying to have a baby.  We went to try IV and initially her doctor through an ultra sound saw a growth or cyst.  We went for x-rays and the doctor (Her OBGYN)  is calling her in for an appointment tomorrow.  He initially thought it was a dermoid (Thing that has hair and teeth) but now he can not see it on the x-ray.  He wants her to take a MRI and she wants to do the blood test for ovarian cancer. It is located on her right ovary and I believe it is 8 x 10 centimeters.  I am very concerned and am going CRAZY with all of this.  I stumbled upon your site today.  She is young (30) and we have not had kids.  We thought that the ovary was the problem, but we are still not sure.  She has not had any bleeding or any pain in her back.  Her cycle is very regular and during sex she has not had pain. She also has not experienced any irregualr bowl movements or any other problems.  Maybe I am just trying to reassure myself, I do not know....  Any thoughts or comments?  Also no family history as well.  We have been through the Chemo and raditotion thing once.  That was easy becasue it was me.  In a weird way I felt in control.  But now with all of this, I just can not imagine......  Would a dermroid show up on a x-ray?  Any thoughts on questions to ask the doctor tomorrow.  I appreciate any help.

Joe

Hey Joe been on the road and not sure you will see this but hope so!  Welcome to the Forum!  I had a dermoid out in November and mine also did not have teeth, xray is only conclusive for dermoid if they do develop teeth or bone.  Many are mostly cystic, full of mucus, so don't worry and I will hold you to that update Joe!  I am the Battalion Scribe and I don't forget!  Mary V

Yes please do let us know how she does, and, I should tell you that I had three kids (easily) with even less than one complete ovary. I am so glad you have each other to lean on.  My husband had melanoma 2 years ago & is doing fine... life is more precious though isn't it?  You sure don't sweat the small stuff as much...
Very best to you, love from Katie

Hello everyone.

I really do appreciate everyones suggestions, thoughts and prayers.  My wife called about an hour ago and told me her doctor did a ultra sound vaginally and it looks to be a dermroid.  It does not have any teeth but it has all of the symptons of being a dermroid, not cancer.  She is still scheduled for her operation to remove it on Tuesday May 16th and that is when we will know for sure.  Her OB felt pretty confident today that it was a dermroid and would be shocked if it was different.  Hopefully she will also be in the 99% club as well.  Thanks again.  This forum is an outstanding idea and very helpful for people that experience this.  I will give an update after her surgery.

What a luck lady your wife is to have such a concerned husband!  I also had a dermoid cyst, and it do show up on an MRI, but I am not sure about on an x-ray.  I am sorry that you both are going through all of the nerv racking wait again.  It is so reassuring to know that 99% of ovarian cysts are benign.  Take a deep breath, and keep your faith.  I will be praying for good reports and for a fast pregnancy :)  Kasie

First of all, remember the 99% mantra.  Also, your wife's age plays highly in her favor.  I am also young (39) and premenopausal.  I had the CA-125 (cancer screening) done.  However, it is very unreliable before menopause.  Anything from fibroids to colds can cause high readings.

I also had a 9 cm cyst on my right ovary.  Usually, over 5 cm and the doctors want to go ahead and remove it.   Even at the size of your wifes, they can do it laproscopically, depending on the doctors experience and your wishes.  And, with a cyst that size, you can still save the ovary.  Even if the right ovary can't be saved, there are many women on here who have become pregnant with one ovary.

First of all, ask for copies of the X-ray and US reports.  Was a transvaginal ultrasound done?  You can tell us here exactly what it says and at least one person here will have had the same report!

8X10 is not an unusually large cyst... Don't stress over the size.  And keep in mind, breathing is very important!  Deep breaths and the two of you will get through this fine!

Yes, here I am!  Welcome to the site Joe.  It is so wonderful that you are here looking for answers for your wife.  She is truly lucky to have a great husband like you.  It is true - 99% of ovarian cysts, masses, or tumors are BENIGN!  And if she does need to have the ovary removed, believe me the other one will work just fine.  There are many women here who have had 3 or 4 children with only a partial ovary left.  You and your wife are in my thoughts and prayers!  Godspeed

I know how many tricks your mind can play on you. My mind was going crazy, as well as most of the others in this forum, at one time or another.  It is a really nerve-wracking thing.   My dr felt something during an exam and then had an ultrasound done.  She saw a 'pelvic mass' and scheduled an mri.  I didn't have any xrays done, so I'm not sure if it would show up or not.  The mri results showed it was a dermoid cyst as large as a grapefruit.  I'm 34 with no children yet.  You're wife is going through pretty much the same thing as I did.  I had NO symptoms or anything weird going on in my body.  I had no pain, or anything, just a pooching belly.  I did miss one cycle and that totally threw me for a loop b/c I have NEVER missed one before, ever!   When this happened, I immediately made an appt, and they discovered the dermoid.  The cyst was so large that it pretty much engulfed my left ovary.  I had a laparatomy on 3/9 this year and she removed the cyst and had to take my left ovary also.  But, I still have my right one, and will be able to still have children.  So, I understand what you must be going through.  I'm sure your wife will be fine.  We'll all be praying for you both.  Please let us know what the dr says at her appt tomorrow.  :)
