complex mass 11cmx12.5x9cm
My 65 year old mom was diagnosed today as having a complex mass with dimesions stated above on her left ovary. The mass has nodules and is oblong in shape, with sectioning(septules?). We are scheduled for a meeting with a gyn. oncologyst on Nov 26th. Question - what are the characteristics of a benign mass vs. a malignant mass when it is this large?
Thank you so much. We live in NH and have currently been referred to Lahey. We have learned that Mass Gen is the best place to bring mom. We want to come down there. Is it possible to get fast tracked in to Mass General? Can you let me know if you or someone from your team has immediate availablity?

while it is not possible to diagnose benign versus malignant ovarian mass until it is removed, here are various factors that might lead one to be worried about a malignant mass:
size: greater than 5 cm
complexity - solid plus fluid filled or cystic elements (masses than are pure solid or pure fluid are usually benign)
the findings of other growths or free fluid in the abdomen on a CT scan
personal history or family history of cancer
age - as one gets older, risk of cancer goes up
