Ultrasound results - please explain

I just received the 2nd ultrasound report.  Nothing has changed but this is what it said "right ovary enlarged 8.2 x 5.5 x 5.9 with cystic component 3.5 x 3.5 and a solid hetrognis (I don't know if that is spelled right)  I am scheduled for laproscopy/possible hysterectomy on the 28th.  Does this mean it could be cancer or something else?  I just need clarification.

Just wanted to let you know that I had my surgery and it was a dermoid cyst.  Removed my right ovary and tube and I am fine.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.  Naturally I think the worse and am scared that this is cancer, my GYN tells me that it is encapsulated and that is very good according to him.  Thank you for your reassurances.

Hi Kim,
A diagnosis of cancer cannot be made by an x-ray study. An x-ray can only describe shapes and sizes. Based on comparing shapes and sizes to what we consider the normal range of a particular structure, (like an ovary), we make decisions about whether further intervention is needed.

So for you, you have a cyst in your right ovary that has solid parts to it and has fluid in it. The word "cyst" means a swelling that has fluid in it and is covered by a skin. Think of it like a blister. There are many reasons for cysts int he ovaries. The most common being ovulation. Cysts that do not go away and are bigger than4 to 5 cm usually are evaluated by laparoscopy. It sounds like you have a good plan. I am sure this is nerve racking for you. Please let us know how things turn out.
