Thank you for your response. I will be contacting her doctor's office tomorrow. I just did not want to upset her any more by "pushing her" if this was not unusual.
Please contact her doctor's office. The staff should be advised that she has swollen legs, as there might be other causes for the swelling besides inactivity. If she has no desire to get out of bed at all, then she is likely to be suffering from depression as well.
Otherwise, yes, she does need some activity. My suggestion is to establish a routine; doing easy things such as rising each morning, making a trip to the bathroom, "changing clothes" even if this just means putting on a fresh nightgown or house dress or pajamas, and then moving to a comfortable sofa or recliner. If the weather is warm and nice, then a walk onto a patio or even a brief pause in the driveway will let her have a breath of fresh air and some exposure to sunlight. It is amazing how important the little things become when one is ill or recovering from illness or surgery.
