Surgery for several small Dermoid Cysts ?

My pelvic ultrasound showed a white shadow and the consultant suggested there could be at least five 1.5 to 2 cm dermoid cysts on my left ovary. My gynae suggested surgery. I'm 28. I got the ultrasound test because for the first time, last month I experienced spotting mid-cycle.

Is surgery necessary? Is it a major operation?
Would the whole left ovary be removed as well?
How long would I be down? (Hospitalized and Medical Leave)

Thanks a million

Thanks for the response. I just went for another ultrasound today, as recommended by my gynae. Hopefully the results are good. Thanks again

Hello, usually dermoids are solitary. It is possible to have more than one cyst in the ovary. If you are not having pain, Might suggest repeating your ultrasound in 6 weeks. Some cysts are from ovulation and will resolve over time.

For woman who get surgery, we try to preserve the ovary and only take out the cyst. This can usually be done by laparoscopy. That is a day surgery procedure and the person can go home on the same day. People usually take about 2 weeks off form work to heal up
take care and good luck.
