Trapped lung syndrome

Went for second thorocentisis today for right lung pleural effusion.  There was so much fluid my lung was completely collapsed.  When the fluid was removed, the lung did not expand, air had replaced the fluid.  At first I was told I would have a chest tube inserted to release the air and hopefully let my lung expand.  Then I was told since I was breathing fine and in no pain that I could go home and call to get a pulmonogist referral on Monday.
The doc that did the thoro acted like he felt guilty, then went on to tell me some horror stories about how my malignancy could be causing my lung to be "trapped."  I wonder if the air was introduced during the procedure or if I really do have a trapped lung.
Anyone else ever experience anything like this at all?
If there is a weird thing to get, I will be the one it seems!

The doctor punctured her lung,it causes a small hole that closes up and heals on its own really fast. Before it closes air gets in there? It happens more then you know.My Mom had this done at City of Hope many times and never had a problem. Its really not as serious as it sounds..It does feel smothering and Sharon you probably coughed during the procedure.Too much ascites built up.Where they able to get it all?My Mom only had one functioning lung,so maybe thats why it affected her differently. All my best to you Sharon and don't give up! Love to you and your family,Jen

For heaven's sake girl ... can't you just be normal for a day or two!  I sure hope you feel OK for the weekend.  Call if you want to talk.  My heart is breaking for you going through all of this.  Hang in there.  Love ya, Judy

I know nothing about what could be causing your current lung problem. But, I wanted to tell you I am sorry it happened and that you have to experience this stress most likely caused by a nimcompoop doctor.

I'm sort of thinking along the same lines as you Sharon.  The air was probably introduced during the procedure.  Too coincidental.  I think you're probably better off waiting for the Pulmonologist to release the air.

I can't say as I've ever heard of this but it could have something to do with the disease.  It seems to me that the sensible and safe thing to do would have been to put a chest tube in at the time.  How do you feel?

I had never heard of this, so I had to google it.  It does seem odd that they would wait until Monday to do something.  I sure know what you mean about if there is a weird thing to get we'll get it.  I struggle with the unusual, too!!!  I hope they can take care of this easily for you and that you feel okay.  I am sorry that you have one more thing to deal with.  Thinking of you, Marie

I had a friend who had a syndrome which involved chronic collapsed lungs...a collapsed lung and "breathing fine" is a relative term I guess....Although chest tubes are no fun I would think you will feel a hell of a lot better after Monday. How are your O2 sats? It suprises me that they let you go the weekend this way.

thinking of you,
c
