What is side effect of omentum removal ?

Had hysterectomy on 11-01-19 leaving only the cervix . During surgery they found a precancerous polyp in uterus and suspicious cells in Fallopian tubes and ovaries . Diagnosed with serous carcinoma . Had cervical biopsy done (negative) and CT Scan (negative) . Gyn/Onc wants to redo surgery , removing cervix and omentum , lymph nodes on both sides , chemo and radiation if necessary . I would like any advice I can get pertaining to removal of the omentum and it’s after effects . Ive heard several negative comments on removal of omentum and heard that I will gain upwards of 20 to 30 pounds after surgery . I have hypothyroidism and could stand to loose 30 lbs as is , and have petite bones and short stature . I cancelled my surgery for 2-07-19 and reset for 3-21-19 because I would like to get as much information as possible before going through this . Have been doing homeopathic remedies for over three months till I can learn more about this

I am sorry you are dealing with this. I understand your concern about having omentum removed. Removal of lymph nodes and cervix would concern me too if it is not absolutely necessary. Have you gotten a copy of your pathology and operative / surgical reports? That would be a good place to start. A second, and maybe third, opinion may be a good idea. You would want to seek out someone in another network of doctors and even hospital. The non-profit HERS Foundation may be able to provide some direction too.

Old before my time . Yes I was givin my reports and left to decipher them myself . Everything I researched came back as ovarian cancer but when I went back to get the results of my cervical biopsy , I asked my gyn just what type of cancer it is and she said uterine . My urologist said “  at least it was contained (in the uterus , tubes , and ovaries ) . Sent me to gyn/onc and he’s the one that wants to redo the surgery and remove the omentum and lymph nodes just to be sure there are no cells left that could spread or to see if it already has spread . I asked him if he could check the lymph nodes without redoing the surgery or keep watch on me to see if it’s still there and he said the only way to check is to redo the surgery to get at abdominal lymph nodes , and remove the omentum . I have never had any cancer symptoms and it was a surprise to them when they opened me up to do the hysterectomy and found the ovaries ,etc , looked suspicious and they found the “precancerous” polyp in the upper right inside wall of the uterus . I worry that if I have it redone and tests still show negative , then I’ve done all this for nothing . Then he wants to do chemo and radiation “ just in case “ . Told him I’m absolutely not doing Chemo so he said he can monitor my doing home remedies after surgery but not before .

Was the cancer staged? Or was a gyn oncologist not present at your original surgery so it could not be staged?

No the gyn/onc was not present at original surgery . They have not staged it yet . Originally I started having stress incontinence in bed overnight so pcp sent me to Urologist . Went through several tests and scan of abdomen and was told that my uterus was upside down and falling out and pushing bladder out with it . Urologist then sent me to Gyn and she confirmed and said I needed a hysterectomy . She and urologist did hysterectomy , leaving cervix to help support bladder , cystocele (sling) and stitches in pelvic for vaginal prolapse . Discovered during surgery a pre cancerous polyp in upper inside wall of uterus and sent the remains of my hysterectomy to the lab because tubes and ovaries looked suspicious . Pathology report came back as high grade serous carcinoma .  Gyn said they took it all out that they could see . Sent me to gyn/ oncologist and he did CT scan and that came back negative but he wants to still take out omentum , cervix , and lymph nodes and already talking chemo and radiation and we don’t even know  if anything is still there . Said he can’t tell anything without doing all that . I was told today  (by a friend) that a pet scan can tell us if it spread and that it is more accurate . I’m just lost , not sure what to do . Still doing home remedies , almost 3 months now which I’m hoping is working or at least keeping it at bay

Yes, I figured a gyn oncologist must not have been present at surgery hence no staging. Thanks for the clarification. I have to wonder if getting a second opinion from a non-gyn oncologist would be better at least as far as recommendations for how to proceed. Gynecologists (and gyn oncologists) do so many unnecessary organ removals that we have to be skeptical whenever they want to do surgery. However, I would think that your pathology report of serous carcinoma could be relied on as being accurate but I don't know much about pathology. I feel for you.
