Why would a doctor order a transvaginal ultrasound for burst ovarian cysts?

I had what the doctor said was burst ovarian cysts on 11/8/10 and it was very excruciatingly painful. The cat scan of my abdomen said there was 2.5 cm of fluid in the pelvis from a possible ovarian cyst. Since then I have continued to have frequent urination (20 times a day), abdominal pain, nausea, bloating, lots of gas, pain in thighs and continue to have pain in lower back (for 9 months). I don't know what the sensation to pee is other than now I only know if I have to pee if my ovaries feel a combo of pressure and pain on them, like someone is pushing down really hard on both of them.

I went to the gyno who wanted to know if there is a history of cancer in my family and he was concerned with the excessive bleeding, bloating and abdominal pain I experience and said I need an ultrasound. The insurance finally approved a transvaginal ultrasound but I dont know what I am in for and are my symptoms suggestive of ovarian cancer? What is a transvaginal ultrasound used to diagnose?

Any thoughts or experiences to share will be greatly appreciated from anyone.....

I made a mistake on the report above, it is a HYPERECHOIC structure  measuring 1 x 0.4cm without evidence of flow that may represent a polyp

Hi Sissy,

Sorry I didnt respond earlier, I wanted to say thanks for your kind words. Its good to know there are others who understand because they are going through the same scary experience. I was more frightened of the potential results than the actual test, that is so true.

I posted the ultrasound report (short version) in my response above.

I guess its a waiting game to see what the gyno will say....

Hi Dian, I wanted to thank you for your thoughtful words, they were comforting to me :)

I went to the hospital because I was having severe abdominal pains again, fever and it turns out I also had strep throat. While there (UCLA is a great place to be btw) I had the transvaginal ultrasound and a regular pelvic ultrasound.

The results of the ultrasound report in a nutshell:

There is a pedunculated fibroid arising from the left body of the uterus measuring 1.8 x 1.3 x1.3 cm

. A hypoechoic structure measuring 1 x 0.4cm without evidence of flow that may represent a polyp

. An exophytic cyst on the right ovary measuring 1 x 0.8 x 0.8 cm

No adnexal masses, no significant pelvic free fluid.

So the doctor at the hospital told me I need to give this report to my gyno to follow up on this.

I am going to fax it over to him today and he will call me back with the next step of what needs to be done.

I know what the report says but don't really know how are they going to treat my symptoms, the heavy bleeding and abdominal and thigh pain are the most bothersome.

Hi,
I am sorry that you are feeling the anxiety I understand as I am also going through some tests. For me it is what they might find which is more scarry than the teat itself. i had two transvaginal ultrasounds, a very easy test, if you get a good tech they will put you at ease if they can by giving you a little info I made an appointment with my GYN immediately after to get results and not have to wait. Good Luck to you I  hope all is well. sissy

The symptoms of ovarian cancer are the same symptoms for a wide array of disorders, and most tumors aren't malignant.  That's good.
The same can be said of a transvaginal ultrasound......they are used to diagnose a wide variety of abdominal abnormalities......they are the starting point in the search for answers.
It is all so scary until you find out what you are dealing with....then you can move forward.
I had a transvaginal ultrasound , as have most of the women here.....it was a piece of cake for me.  At least your doc will be able to see if something is pushing on your bladder causing repeated urination, and maybe what is causing your pain , and bloating and bleeding.  It is good you have a doctor who wants to get to the bottom of all this.
Please do let us know what you find out.  Good luck.
Peace.
