Wouldn't it be nice

Would it be great if we all could start on birth control pills now and see it it would control or cure our ovarian cancer.  I don't consider a tremendous breakthrough in OVCA taking a BCP's now when it is 40 years too late.  A breakthrough would be a cure being announced.

Ha, ha, ha, ha....I have been on birth control for many years, had two kids, no family history of ovca...worked out regularly, took vitamens and antioxidents...still ovca at age 37....I don't believe any of us are in control of what is happening to us.....praying for a cure for us all!

Hi Ronni...Your case sounds similar to mine.... no whispering here either... but after 9 months of to and fro and being told IBS... Stage 4 also. No previous cancer in either side of my family. Just before my operation I couldn't even keep a cup of coffee down. Went walking one Sunday afternoon with my daughter.. stopped off for a coffee, and on the way home, was going behind the trees throwing up the coffee. I knew then it was something bad, so insisted on a Ct scan the next day, and two days later told of the outcome. Not a good feeling being told cancer.
I guess all we can do now is fight on...hope for some major breakthrough with a cure sometime soon, and take each day as it comes, get out the best of each one, and enjoy life as much as possible. Sending lots of hugs to Costa Rica....Helen..

When I started this thread I was furious and still am.  Brian Williams on NBC news at the beginning says"Breakthrough in Ovarian Cancer found".  Oh my G-d I could hardly wait to here and imagine my surprise when it was just more of the same.

A couple of months ago same thing when they meaning the networks and remember I live in Costa Rica anyway said that Ovarian Cancer is not a whispering silent cancer,  I emailed them and said look by the time it shouts you are either stage 3 or stage 4... no response of course.. They do it so you will watch the entire news cast to see what they will say and usually its at the end of the broadcast. More ratings...

I also watch Spanish networks here and guess what???? No mention was made here on the birth control b.s. story...Nothing... Oh and I never had whispered symptoms... Within 3 weeks of my symptoms I was on the operating table and told sorry you hve stage IV ovc/

I am sorry that ME and all of you have to go through having ovarian cancer.  As Marty pointed out her daughter Leslee had none of the criterias as I didn't.

I figured out that I have to play with the uniform G-d gave me and as someone else said it may not be what I ordered but it is what  I was served...So with that I am grateful I am here today and feeling well..

I hope everyone is well today.. and thanks for letting me vent once again... Ronni

Well just for the record, if I were to start taking BCP now at age 77  would that prevent OVCA for me ?  they splashed that news on every corner of the globe, newspapers, tv  radio, would love to get the "guy" that came up with this and give him a lesson in OVCA 101.  Leslee was also one of the ones that no criteria fit,  so it shouldn't have happened, right???  well it did, so there goes some of the "wise" therories.   Do you think they are trying a different line of thought here?  Population control, anti-abortion, teen age pregnacies?  this would not be the first time that the medical/political people have attempted a wide control of the people.  I am just waiting for some "bright" phamacutical company to come out with a "******" that prevents cancer.

My friend has been on the BC pills since a teenager and is now 26 and it looks like she has ovarian cancer, there was a report on British TV the other morning and that frustrated her the same as they said BC pills would prevent OVCA, poppycock!!

But then your chances of blood clots and other cancers are higher.

They always put things like this in the news to show they are making great strides.

I hate news reports like this. It makes you feel like you did something wrong and now you are paying for it.  If they have to put this information out there, they could at least say something to the ones that already have it. Like this would work for us also. I kept waitng for them to even acknowledge those that have ovca already and not one word. They should at least take into consideration how things like that sound to all of us that are fighting it.   It is very aggravating to watch.

I've met women down here who have taken birth control pills, and still contracted late stage Ovarian Cancer.  Maybe like most things in life... they work for some, and not others. I think if one is to get cancer, nothing will stop it. I'm 'first cab off the rank' in our family...Stage 4.... no cancer of any type among the ancestors...non smoker...social drinker of wine only... and very healthy up to the cancer dx. I guess we've just got to go with the flow.... and make the best of each day. Hugs to all..Helen...

I was so not happy, but it did anger me enough to distract me from having my face in a trashcan and feeling like a dishrag.  You are right about the change in "science", take this, don't take that, eat this, don't eat that.  The talk of the day in my day was don't take BC if you can avoid it as there were all sorts of nasty consequences.

Before a research group publishes their findings that should have to first say who is footing the bill for their research/study. To often it is someone who definitely has a conflict of interests.

This is from the BBC on the day the pill was released in England in 1961.

Sir Charles Dodds, Britain's leading expert on the drugs contained in the Pill and who heads a research institute at Middlesex Hospital, has said the pills could have long-term side-effects.
He compared a woman's body with a clock mechanism. "Even if you thoroughly understand the mechanism of a clock, provided it is going well it is very much better to leave it alone. To interfere with it if you do not understand it can be disastrous," he said.

There were a lot of issues that were solved by the pill but like most drugs, it was put on the market without anyone knowing the mechanisms by which it worked so they could not possibly have known all of the effects.

I think this "finding" has only clouded the already murky waters of the whole safe birth control issue.  They have a new BC that allows you to completely quit having periods.  Would that have any bearing on these new findings? What do you suppose the health consequences of that could be?  It doesn't sound healthy or natural and people should just let nature take it's course as much as possible.
Besides where would some women be without THAT excuse. LOL

I haven't been diagnosed with OVCA (thankfully and hopefully won't be) yet, however, I've been on birth control from 1999 until 2006 (when I found out I was pregnant). Yup, I was still on the bc when I found out I was pregnant (I was shocked as I just thought it was another cyst), so of course I stopped immediately (my son is healthy and fine and an energetic 15 month old). I also have always had cysts even on the bc (low dose and high dose, and have tried all kinds of them), so I have very little faith in that even with today's medical knowledge and advancements, bc doesn't work with everybody.  My mom and my older sister both could not find a bc that worked for them either, and my younger sister doesn't take them. I just don't have faith in it right now. I currently have a cyst on my right ovary (again) and am going to see a gyn/onc next week, because even still taking bc, the cyst has not dissolved or shrunk (as far as I know) for the last 3 months. Its just frustrating to me, so I couldn't even imagine those of you who are in worse conditions than myself, and I hate to complain about my symptoms and all, but I just wanted to vent a little bit too (hehehe).  Thank you such kind ladies for listening to me  :0)

So, I agree with you all too, they can just shove it. I'd rather hear something about more concrete information for a cure than about their theories and surveys.

Much Love,
Erin

OK, and a little P.S. here...So I don't look like a total ignoramus--I know there IS data to suggest that low-dose birth control pills can protect against ovarian cancer, and it does make sense, at least to this lay person. But if you're one of the folks on the wrong side of the statistics, it doesn't mean shite.

So yeah, they can shove it.

Great venting!

Just to insert a bit of my own cynicism here--What do you bet that if we traced this news story back that we'd find a drug company (or two, or three) behind it?

Ronni,
Good vent.  Sometimes I wonder if the news reporters take into account what the **** they are spewing really means.   They just read off the teleprompter.

Hugs and hope you are doing okay!

Hmm  I thought I was the only one who was annoyed with last nights news report.. Lets see they told me these are the things that prevent ovarian cancer.

1. Having children young.  my first daughter was born I was 15 is that young enough

2. Having children I have 3

3. Tubal ligation hmm I had that at age 24

4. Breast feed your babies... yup did that

5. early menopause yup age 42 no periods since.

6. Take birth control pills up from age 16 thru 24 not withstanding having 3 kids..

7. No history of anyone in my family ever having any kind of cancer let alone female cancers...
So what did all this get me.... Stage IV ovarian cancer diagnosed last April...

They can take their news reports and shove them.. off my soap box.... and yes I am angry, angry that every week its something else... don't drink coffee, do drink coffee don't drink wine do drink wine...
Thanks for letting me vent... Ronni
