additional info appreciated

Thank you for your information...my Mom is in Hospice as she has chosen not to receive additional cancer treatments. The only thing she has continued is her liquid nutrition that goes through her port site. She is very weak and Hospice has finally gotten her uncontrollable nausea and dry heaving under control. She does have a bowel obstruction, tumors (I don't know what ascites are?) etc., and has become very weak, very quickly. She tends to sleep her days away and I am not sure if it is because of the cancer or the medications she is on. It is just hard to see her decline after being so strong and positive for so long. Any information you can pass on is very helpful and much appreciated.  :)

Ascites is a fluid that builds up in the abdomen. It can be drained if it becomes painful.

I agree with Pam that the sleep is an escape.  My mother slept much of the time after her treatment was discontinued.

I hope that you are taking care of yourself through all of this.  I did not when my mom was sick.  Caregivers often go without sleep and they don't eat right.   I lost about 20 lbs during my mom's illness.  Try to set a little time aside each day for you to just try to relax your mind.  I am sure your mom would want you to be healthy through this.   I know personally how hard this is.  I suffered more after my mom's diagnosis than I did after my own.

My prayers are with you and your mom.   Marie

Mary my thoughts are with you and your family.  Hospice is keeping your mom comfortable and free of pain.  Sleeping is a great escape for her...whether it is induced by drugs or the cancer, it does not matter...she is resting comfortably, and that is what counts.
Hugs to you all.
